Hi. It's me. I'm back. As a neophyte, it wasn't too long ago that I learned that a "silencer" is called a suppressor not just because the latter is the correct name, but because the units do not actually reduce the sound of a gun shot to a whisper, as in the movies. What I read stated that they reduce the decibel level by about half, but there is definitely still a Bang! Then more recently I started seeing YouTube videos and ads indicating that the technology has gone further and there is now what is properly called a silencer, which is distinct from a suppressor. So, some questions...How quiet, roughly, does a silencer actually make a gunshot? Are silencers legal in all states? What types of guns would one even use a silencer with? And, since, one assumes, none of us is John Wick (John, if you're here, I do apologize, you son of a gun, you), for what purpose would one use a silencer?
I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. Others who know more will chime in I'm sure, but for now: A) Quieter. If the round is subsonic to begin with, it can be considerably quieter. Even when the round is supersonic, I've been told by hunters that it makes it difficult for animals to tell where a shot came from, unlike with unsuppressed rounds. B) Some states allow them, some don't. C) Can be used with any firearm if it has a threaded barrel that isn't surrounded by a slide or other part of the gun. Revolvers are normally not shot suppressed, since the cylinder gap can't be closed off, and will therefore allow gasses/noise out. I.e. - it doesn't work well. D) Hunting, target shooting, or any other time when loud noises that can cause hearing damage can be minimized.
It's allowed in many countries, but in 'Murica a silencer (also called a suppressor) on a firearm requires a PAID tax stamp and fingerprinting or you can wind up in prison. Because, reasons. But, just for giggles, let's educate. Take an ordinary book, hardcover. Hold it at waist level and drop it flat onto the floor. The sound it makes is much louder than a suppressed firearm firing standard and high velocity rounds. Utilizing subsonic rounds would make it more silent. The purpose is not to make the firearm completely silent like in the movies, it's to make it harder to tell where the sound came from. But, I digress. And for the moment, it is being contested in court on occasion. But we will most likely never see a time when the .GOV allows the Citizenry in this country free access to silencers without a BATFEXYZQ grovelling license because they FEAR us, and they always will. Perhaps rightfully so.
Have fired a military sub sonic round out of a military suppressor in a small caliber pistol, have no idea what it was meant for, and the action noise was about as loud as the report. Slide coming back and next round loading. The muted sound it made would have been very hard to locate. The projectile hitting the gelatin was the loudest source of sound in the test area. This was in 1960 so I can't even guess what the state of the art is now.
i found a 3dp file that holds a 10/22 bolt closed so no pop or flash. yes you have to cycle it by hand. i cant wait to build this. a fully printed lever gun using ar fcg and bolt. the bolt carrier is printed. in 300blk this will be awesome quiet. levers need carbon fiber or aluminum.
