I long ago gave up trying to keep up with modern games. They move too fast and are too complicated for this 61-year-old's brain.
One of my favorites, which I still play all the time, is The Settlers. Some of you probably have been fans of this.
I currently play The Settlers: Rise of an Empire -- History Edition. While there are sites where you can download user maps, no matter how many times I've been told which folder to download the user maps into, they never show up when I'm in the game.
Do any of you know anything about this? In addition, feel free to suggest similar games.

In my younger days I was heavily into arcade games, then the early 8-bit games on my Atari and C64 machines, then on my first few PCs. Never got into the dedicated game machines - Nintendo, Sega, etc. When I became a professional programmer, I lost interest. In VoTech IT school, an instructor told me the last thing he wanted to do after working on computers all day was play games on one. I found I felt the same way. Now, long retired, my only gaming is Solitaire, Bazooka Boy and a Battleship game on my smartphone. :D

There are three types of gamers these days. You've got the smartphone gamers, who are mostly a product of everything phone related because they've really got no experience or care to play anything else. Then there's the console gamers, who never got into computing and don't mind spending ten times the money. Finally, the PC gamers, who also made all of this possible and enjoy the widest variety of games.

You can download Steam and enjoy games across the platform of your choosing. Steam Store

    This is the way.

played my first video game back in the late 70s - Apple II computer - Asteroids of all games - actually came as part of the barely nothing software package >>> growing up in arcade galleries - it was really something to experience the technology .....

I do play a few PC games. I've been playing since computer first came out, Atari, Commodore, 386 intel chips... I got my degree in Computer Science but didn't hack much code however it helped me diagnose system problems throughout my career in computers, communications, electronics...damn near everything and as the years past more and more things have microchips in them... refrigerators, TVs, cars...

I haven't played 'Settlers' but have looked at it. I do remember playing 'Civilization' into the wee hours of the morning, locked in concentration when it first came out years ago but haven't played it in decades, 'Settlers' is much like 'Civilization' but made by different company.

I play mostly Strategy/Tactical wargames like 'Hearts of Iron IV' (not for the casual gamer as it takes years to learn) and currently 'Gates of Hell - Ostfront' which is a Real Time Strategy WW2 of the Eastern and Western fronts, pretty intense and models the equipment used.

Not sure what advice I can offer about your 'downloaded User maps.' With Windows 10 and I imagine Windows 11 (I installed if for wife but don't use it myself) most everything is downloaded into the 'Download' folder unless you tell it specifically where to download it to then you would have to simply drag the file or cut and paste the file to the correct game folder. So, you need to learn 2 things:

    1. Where is the file you downloaded?
(look in your 'Download' folder or simply search for it starting from your top level in 'C' drive (most likely) or download it again and make sure you know where it is going this time)

    2. Where is the game folder where it is supposed to go?
(get this from some of your friends or off a forum and they normally can tell you how to find it)

Start a 'Conversation' with me if you need some help.

I worked for intel after I retired from the A.F. worked in the test center building prototype systems and then testing them to their limits, a lot of that was high end game systems playing the lates in high end games. THIS was a very challenging job, while it sounds great the idea of playing games all day and getting paid for it, it was NOT any of that, it was actually very hard work, head scratching, and at some time's highly frustrating! I ended up building my own high zoot P.C. system with ALL the top shelf stuff, about that time, steam had just come along, and we had our own account, so getting games was super easy. I got into World Of series of games during the Early Closed Beta, and got addicted to World of Warships more than the others! Having built most of the servers and the network for them, I got a lifetime membership not only to Steam but to WoWs across all the games! I have played many of the first issue "Black Ops" editions of all the latest games at that time, but the only one I play now is still World of Warships, and even then, only a few hours a week at most! My life time membership included unlimited access and ALL games, vehicles/weapons, systems, and upgrades, I don't take advantage of those, preferring to play through as a normey, and I still playthrough in Beta testing with the company whenever they are prepping a release or update package, it's insanely fun and a great way to burn a couple hours!

In my first enlistment, USAF 1976-1980, during Tech School at Chanute AFB, Ill., there was a "greasy spoon" diner/entertainment center a short ealk from my barracks. We spent a lot of time and quarters there, playing the various arcade games. Spy Hunter was a favorite, as was a game where you were in the Old West shooting at the bad guy while a stage coach slowly moved up and down center screen, and several cacti acted as cover. I found I could riccochet my shots off the screen edge and hit the bad guy hiding behind something. Space Invaders, Galaga, Galaxian, and others were there. I hate to think how much money we wasted in there!

In my second enlistment, US Navy 1980-1986, the student barracks at Great Lakes, Ill. had several electronic arcade games. I'd play a couple games before we formed up to march to Tech School. Even during my ship's Refresher Training in Gitmo in late 1983, the base laundromat had a bunch of arcade games. One of my Sonar Tech buddies (I was an Electronic Tech) had brought his Atari 800 computer on board. We played games on it. That directly led me to buying my first computer, an Atari 800XL with more memory, after another Sonar Tech buddy and I rented an apartment offbase after getting back from deployment. Soon I rotated to a shore billet as did he, so no worries of going to sea. We had more time to waste on my Atari! :D(y)
