Watched Threads and Email Alerts

Up until now, any thread you've created or replied to became a 'Watched' thread which would email you when another responded to it. This was default behavior but it made the idea of watched threads not very useful.

The new default behavior is that you will need to opt in to watch a thread. This will alert you either with alerts on the forum or with emails if there is new activity in the thread.

Find the Watch Thread button at the top of any page on a thread you'd like to Watch
    Screenshot from 2015-01-07 16:49:57.

You'll have an option to Watch with emails or without emails

If you are creating a new thread, you can also choose to watch and additionally receive emails before you hit Create Thread

Now anytime there is new activity in this thread, you receive an alert and potentially an email depending on you selection above. You can also view your unread watched threads from the bottun at the top of any page (Same goes for Forums)

If you'd like to change things back to automatically watching all threads that you create or reply to, change it in your preferences

    Good change M!!!

That will definitely help where you responded to a thread, but did not really want to watch it, but missed unchecking the box.

Thanks. I wiped out all the previously watched threads so we all have a clean slate to work from. You may need to cruise around and rewatch your favorites...

Well I suppose a clean slate is a good thing from time to time.... I had a lot of pages of watched threads.... so goes the war.

Sorry about that guys. I think many had 100s of pages that they weren't really watching except by default. This was the only way I could change things

Don't think that deleting all the watched treads was a good idea. Liked being able to see posts on old threads without going to "New Posts" to view and keep them going. Would have been better to set up something to delete the watched posts for all members on it when a thread has no activity for a specific amount of time. Not sure if that is possible.

Understood but it wasn't possible to pick and choose.

I've been receiving a lot of complaints lately about the amount of email notifications that people are getting about threads they have no interest in. We've tried to explain it but its been a chronic complaint especially for the technically challenged

Apologies to those who were actually using the feature by un-watching threads they didn't care about - it was not our intention to cause you grief :(

One way that you can see threads that you've posted in is by viewing 'My Content' from the menu. Might make it easier to find the stuff you were interested in watching and you can certainly change your settings to watch everything again as shown in the last 2 pictures of the first post above.

Please note that anything you manually Watched over the past 12-14 hours is no longer watched. Some threads that come to mind might be So Long and CoC Discussion, etc.

Oh well, better to have years of links (short a week) than only a few days worth, right? [shtf]

Thanks @melbo for changing the default values from opt out to opt in...it makes better sense, and gives my spam filter a break when I forget to opt out. Thumbs up to the site's continuous improvement program! [applaud]

Thank you Melbo and Trunk Monkey. Was dreading having to go back and re-watch all the threads I am interested in.

Yeah, we'll just need to learn to 'watch' anything we want to going forward. As @chelloveck mentioned, opt in is better than opt out.

Images #4 and #5 from the first post in this thread show you how to get everything back to how it was before the change. I watch and get emails for everything:

If you'd like to change things back to automatically watching all threads that you create or reply to, change it in your preferences
