What is robotic surgery for hernia repair? or Going under the knife.

My next adventure is a new to me system of repair.
I had the surgery many years ago when the process involved an open wound needed to repair the hernia.

No date yet but the day of the week is certain now only the date to be cleared from CCP Virus test.

Totally impressed by the technology for such microsurgery, as well as the skill of the doc in operating like an expert mechanic!

Had 3 hernias repaired that way back in 2014, one of them was repairing one that has been repaired back in the 90s with the knife. A lot less painful and a much shorter recovery. On mine they poked two holes under the navel, pulled things in sewed it up from the inside then put a bunch of mesh under it stapled to pelvic bones. Gut ain't tried sneaking out through the groin since then. Most annoying part was the damn nurse kept bothering me to pee. Sure I have not drank anything fer 24 hours and now you want me to whizz not once but twice before you will discharge me! Anyway no scars and was splitting firewood and lifting logs again 8-9 weeks later. First couple of days did hurt pretty good but that is to be expected. I imagine the tech has only gotten better since my hernia adventure.

Thanks, talked to the Doc Yesterday, this will be an out patient event. Compared to the first time I expect to be up and working in 4 days.
Before it was a lot of pain and 6 weeks off work, so home the same day

Yup, no more staples or sewing the patch to the separation linings, just a bit sticky backing to hold the patch in place as it heals and the layers float as near possible so no pulling or pain after the repair.

I'll be interested to hear how your recovery goes. The Mr had a hernia repair surgery about 9 years ago and it was regular surgery with a lot of painful downtime. He had issues with the mesh they put in as well, hurt to stretch or lean backwards for years afterwards. Seeing how his went kept me from getting mine fixed. Mine is not visible but it showed up on an unrelated MRI and sometimes I do feel a sharp pain there. Not enough of an issue to suffer a fix over, but if your's goes well mebbe I'll rethink my oh-eff-no stance.

My regular Doctor told me at week 8 to do some simple exercises 2-3 times per day over 6 months that would keep the scar tissue that forms over the mesh stretched and more pliable as it forms. Seems to have been good advice, Rarely do I get that stabbing pain that feels like someone sticking a screwdriver in ya. After a long day bouncing up and down on the tractor or a day of cutting, lifting, splitting and stacking firewood...... Yeah you know it is there. Amazingly doing those same exercises after days like those tones the pain down about 75%. For me it was basically groin stretching exercises like spreading the legs as far apart as I could and bending over and touching the ground and slowly moving the hips side to side and forward and backward. Other one is laying down with one leg straight and the other knee up and pulling the forehead up to touch the up knee and switching knees for about a dozen of those. Look dumb as hell doing them and the first one sounds more like porn than exercise but it worked for me and still does after a rough day.

Will try and find the DVD with my scans. Can clearly see the mesh and what has built up over the years on it in a couple of the pictures. Was pretty amazed at the 3D scans that mapped my whole internal workings out and fer $60,000 worth of scans and drinking radioactive joy juice you get a copy of the video on DVD in a jewel case!

Rounded the last curve to the hospital and of course there were two"ladies" walking in the middle of the parking lot roadway. Seems they had no fear of CCP just road hogs wanting to talk and walk as they pleased.

Anyway today was my date with the Doc and Robot.

Prechecked in and did the usual extra sign ins.

As I was rolled into the OR the handy CRNA walked with the gurney and needled the IV tube port, he quickly hit it with a Cocktail and said goodnight. I was asleep instantly before I could focus on the TV screen's color test pattern!

    Time was about 10:30

Next awareness was in the Recovery area and a Nurse feeding me chipped ice and my wife sorting my clothes from the Plastic Bag.

We left after I had two cups of coffee, a small snickers bar and a small chocolate bar and the usual peanut butter fold over.

Nurse pushed the wheel chair to the Truck and assisted me in climbing into the truck cab.

I have four small wounds now covered with water dissolving tape as the stitches are under the skin and also self dissolving in the tissue.

Ride home was uneventful (as if I would have noticed).

Wife parked the truck, grabbed a Walker from inside and I handily climbed the 2 sets 20 steps to the Master Bed Room where the house pup demanded to know why we were gone so long as it was now 1632.

The only discomfort is the fact that I had both sides done and the stomach was compressed along with the bladder.

Really, no pain as before from mangled and sewn tissues 50 years ago.

So right now I am able walk standing fully upright without pain and have been doing a few PT motions to loosen up and get the air injected earlier removed through the usual Exit PORTS.

I expect to make the PT Appointment this week for my Rotator Cuff workout.

    Nap time.

New method is no longer invasive and now if a redo is needed it is no longer required to cut through the scar tissue.

    Simple, safer and less pain.

Thank you for the report on your surgery experience. I may have something like that in my future. Having viewed the video, I am glad the medicos have good knock-out juice for the I.V. to go along with those high tech procedures.(y)

OK all done at the Docs place.

Clean bill of health and allowed to handle 50lb feed sacks(with care).
Best thing I did of late.

I do recommend the procedure I received and it sure has a lot less pain after the operation than the original open surgery of 50 years ago.

Thanks all for the awareness and prayers .

Glad to hear it went well and you're already back up and kicking. Sounds like things have certainly improved over how that sort of thing was repaired even just a few years ago. Maybe I'll have to suck it up and make my own appointment now. Or not. But thanks for sharing. :)
