    From the Wired article -

"But it’s not wrong to look toward government—local if not regional and national—for aid. Building cities in ways that don’t exacerbate hazards is a start, like less impermeable surfacing, fewer buildings in the wildland-urban interface, and reined-in coastal and watershed development

Lost me completely at this point... While the author makes some good points, most are fuzzy at best.

I liked this: the rules seem to be shifting a bit again. The new message: Be ready for 14 days on your own. Two weeks.
The rules? No, I would say the recommendation is two weeks. People need 2 weeks of supplies to survive on their own. Bt it is good that the government is shifting away from the 3 day kit.

The longer the article went on, the more idiot. That above was from the article, I wonder why that disaster research frees it is unrealistic for people to "hoard stuff"? This article seems to be focused on the inner city. It is worried that those people need the most help but will not get the help quick enough, which in the authors opinion is the city folks. A city person can hoard food and items just as easy as a country person.

...prepper madness...it's not rational...If we really want people to survive, we can’t rely on them to hoard all that stuff in their homes...

Yup, a bunch of idiots figuring that common folks are too stupid, lazy...hell, just generally incompetent and greedy. Let the government do the support thingy.

I'm beginning to seriously dislike the yuppie millennials spouting this trash.

Seems like a socialist philosophy. Be sure to have enough to make up for the fact that your neighbors didn't bother to put some aside for a disaster.

When it is all read, those who prep and the government have the duty to take care and share with those who are disadvantaged and if you don't it is hoarding. Problems are being created by man, cities built wrong, income not shared properly, climate change causing all the weather problems. My take, OPSEC is crucial, if you do prep, hide it, appear to starve with the sheep, show up for the handouts, etc. If it looks like you have something, food, water, power, heat, transportation, etc, the sheep and the government are going to be there to "share" all your preps. If you spend your money on drugs, booze, don't work, are "impoverished" or a member of a minority, you are not expected to even try and it is societies duty to take care of you.

Here in Louisiana when the ebt cards went down for a short time it was crazy. People are not prepared. I bet in one week there would be thousands killed fighting over food. Just yesterday in Walmart I saw a boy aged maybe 16 -18 sitting cross leg on the floor playing with his high dollar phone while his mother shopped for food, how long would he last? Most people think you are crazy when you tell them the gov will not always be there to help. Even my wife will tell you that she does not want to live after a bad nuclear war,she wants the bomb to kill her so she will not have to deal with the aftermath. Me I’m different,I want to live,so I prepare.

I have met a few that are in denial as well, not wishing to survive ,but I bet the the time comes they sing another toon.
I have spoken to my neighbors (cautiously) and for the most part they believe them selves to be prepared .
Most people I know distrust the government , but that does not mean the are doing any thing about it.
If i'm careful with my stores they should last several months (provided I'm completely isolated).
If the disaster includes flooding I'm good, if the coast falls into the sea I'm still good ,fire suppression i'm good. pandemic ,I'm prepared , volcanic or nuclear disaster ,it's covered some what . I don't think any one will survive a direct hit.
EMP or CME is covered , economic collapse ,covered.
A man can have all the preparation in the world, but if he is not prepared to meet his maker , he has neglected the most important issue of life.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

To me, it all depends on the both the severity and expected duration of the upset condition.

I'd be ok with charity or barter to good folks in an anticipated short term event such as the Wilmington island issue. The same has happened to me in my AO a few times in the past.

I believe helping my community is the only way for me to get through a disaster. I'm in a unique situation where I am a third generation owner of our farm and have cultivated relationships with most of the families within a couple of miles in any direction. Denying someone might mean I don't get access to something I need to have.

I do realize it's a unique situation and may don't have an option beyond hunkering down and keeping grey.
