i have a friend that wants to trade a 1 year old FTDX-1200 for my 5 year old 857D. He want to run it mobile and I never do. Thoughts?
i have a seperate UHF/VHF radio for repeaters. BT i have looked at problems with the unit and they seem to be relagrated to early firmwear issue with mutting audio. 4.6/5 on eham for the 1200 and 4.5/5 for the 857D Did you find something I did not ?
I saw a few posts about low Output Power, on these units, and a few that talk about low Average Power, when operating at Peak Envelope Power... This comes from over dependance on ALC feedback to the Driver Stages, to keep the IMD Spec in check... It really messes with what you want for REAL Talk Power in SSB.... Kenwood also has this issue, with Factory ALC Setups... If one has a 100 Watt PEP Rated Output, then one would like to see 75+ Watts on an Average Output Power Meter, during Voice Peaks, otherwise the ALC is set way to high... and needs to be adjusted...
Well I made the trade and love the new radio. It works great and with a Par end Fedz 20 meter antenna as a sloper with the majic box 12 inches off of the ground hidden in a pine tree(HOA)made great contacts after lighting the fire the first time. Was getting 59+ reports with great audio.
