Using heat resistant mortar would be recommended, to reduce cracking and extend the operating life of the oven. Heat resistant mortar the utility of the oven could be improved by incorporating a small donkey boiler using escaping hot air from the chimney flue. Very nice looking stove! I was also thinking that fire brick and refractory cement would lengthen the life of it. And I like the donkey boiler idea. Thanks for sharing! DW
