If we here stressed about snakes we would not spend too much in the bush...they ARE more afraid of your than you are of them .. ;)

Snakes just want to "snuggle" and keep warm too!
    That's what they said anway!
Sure made the guy on bivouac leave that sleeping bag quick!
    Drill sargeants almost died laughing!

    The one's i don't see..I worry about..
The one's i do see...I kill most of them...
    I won't kill a King,Garter,Pine or Green snake...
    If it has fang's...It's dead...and
    I've killed a least a thousand...mostly cotton mouth's..
They will stand their ground and try to bite you...Nasty bugger's

This is an 'urban legend'. I've lived in Florida nearly all my 53 years - NEVER found a corroborated story of this.

When we swim in local lakes and water holes, we worry more about the bigger gators. The small ones are no worry.

Where I camp, the rattlers are more worry than cotton-mouths. But I truly worry more about them danged wolf spiders! THEY do like to get 'chummy' in the tent if they can crawl in! ;)

I have been bit by eastern diamond back rattlers and black widow spiders. Of the two, the rattler bite was more painful initially, but the black widow made me ill longer. So I am cautious of all poisonous beasties. Better to be safe than sorry is my motto. Shoot (or swat) first, ask questions later, cliche, I know. Experience was my teacher, and I don't want to meet my teacher again on this subject.

....I never go out of my way to kill a snake, that is how most people out here get bitten ;) , if it is right around home of a multiple use camp then it may get wacked but other than that they can go their way and I will go mine. They do a great job of keeping a lid on all the vermin and the tourists out of the best camping area ..[aiw]
