I’ve been working on my bug in supplies and I wanted to get some opinions. This is for natural disasters and such. We went without power for a week and a half and two days without water last year.

I have 5 MRE’s a good pile of canned food, Three 24 packs of bottled water, about 500 rounds of ammo for my main rifle, ~1000 rounds for my pistol, and 75 rounds for my pump 20gage.
I live in an apartment right now because of circumstances outside my control. My plan if anything happens is to first off fill up my 3 5 gallon carboys(Glass beer making jugs) with water and seal them up. Then consume or throw away anything in the fridge that will spoil quickly. My bug out bag is fully stocked and ready to go if I need to hit the woods, which is just 10 yards away from my back door. My main problem is that I have 3 roommates. I have the master bedroom but they are well armed but not well supplied. They don’t stock up on anything so they’re going to be looking to me for that stuff.

Also what types of canned food do you think is a good choice to stockpile?

Stock lots of Porn and Beans, Tracy has a sales brochure on them. Enough beans and the room-mates will want to go elsewhere, especially with no electric fans to vacate the fumes.

When the "S" hits the fan, hand them a box full of SPAM, instant rice and unflavored oatmeal.........
    "Here's your share, guys!" :D

You can store away a twenty pound bag of rice, and several pounds of lentils and split peas (don't need to soak for hours like regular dry beans) in new paint cans (any good hardware store has them!) or tough plastic bottles, also a couple flats of mixed veggies and Chef Boyardee stuff. That'll get you by for a couple weeks or more.
Flavored oatmeal and grits for breakfast. Though Mountain House "Scrambled Eggs with Ham and Red&Green Peppers" is great stuff, as freeze-dried goes!
Store some drink mix too - makes the water go down easier. Gatorade makes some single-serve packets.
Don't forget coffee, sugar and creamer, if you are into morning java.

That does not sound like a lot of water, unless of course you are carrying it on your back. For bugging in, I would purchase some 5 gallon or 6 gallon water containers, fill them up and keep them somewhere out of the way. Canned soups or meats, and lots of beans, corn, etc. is a good way to buy long term storage food. Anything in Mountain House will last a long, long time. They are also light in weight and easy to carry. If you place some of the water bottles in the freezer they will freeze and they will help to keep your freezer/refrigerator cold longer, giving your meat/poultry items a little more time, plus when the ice in the bottle melts you have cold water to drink.

Have you thought about storing most of your food preps somewhere close by, maybe a small storage locker or rental?

Sounds like your ammo allotment is okay, but it would be a good idea to have a few more rounds for your main battle rifle. I know that the apartment is not yours, but if the front door to your room/storage area is not that secure, then you may want to think about buying a metal door, and putting several dead bolt locks in it. Store what you can in your room or area, that way they are not devouring your stuff before or after something happens.

I am in a similiar situation, minus the roomates. My BOBs are pretty well taken care of, except for the occasional must have item. I am working on stocking up on food items, already have containers for about 20 gallons of water. As far as your roomates, good luck. When SHTF even nice people can turn in a second with the threat of not being able to eat and you're in the next room with a whole bunch of food and water. Making you look like an a$$ for not freely giving away all that you have planned for and they have refused to plan for.

Heh heh... Porn and beans. I'm not sure what store Tracy shops at, but it sounds like one-stop shopping!

Seriously, You can get a case of Ramen noodles (20 packs) for two bucks. It might might be the most nutritious meal, but it's filling and it lasts a long time with no refrigeration needed. I'd stock up on that.

ramen is a good choice - it can be eaten cooked (or right off the brick IF YOU MUST!) I'd stock up on things that pack a punch in a small conatiner
canned chicken or tuna is a GREAT inexpensive small package with plenty of protein and doesn't need anything to cook it!
Granola bars are good too and have a several month shelf life (be sure to rotate your stock) i've been eating bars that expired in january and february '09 as recently as june 6 '09

you really want to stock up on things that don't need water to prepare - otherwise you will use your water supply and run out twice as fast! obviously if you are bugging IN this isn't a problem but if you are bugging out - those "wet" foods will definitely be heavier!

I meant to say "might not". Sorry for the confusion.

zarraza, you're about the chicken and tuna. Peanut butter is also one of those big-protein-bang-for-the-buck foods, and it's not too expensive.

true dat, but it wasn't about bang for the buck - it was more about dollar value AND container size - i have 20 jars of PB in the pantry - so I really know the value GOOD CALL on that one! - another good item is HONEY (try to get one grown in your area - it helps build up resistance to allergens AND has an indefinite shelf life - they found honey in the tombs in egypt that was well over 3000 years old and all it needed was a little heat to soften it up to make it edible.

True about honey. My only issue with honey is that when I'm hungry, a big ol' bowl of honey just doesn't appeal to me. We always get our honey from the farmer's market here in town. I like the fact that we're supporting local growers.

in a true survival situation, honey is the BEST natural energy source - so you wouldn't need a big ol' bowl, just a few tablespoons worty would suffice - then when hungy get a big bowl of peanut butter! :D
