Don't forget your OILS - Coconut oil is excellent for preps, has a shelf life that exceeds any other (liquid) oils and is excellent for your health -

Awesome cooking fat. Very high smoke point, less "absorptive" (ie less greasy food) than other fats. Trans fats are non-existent in pure coconut oil. The existing (decades old) study was based on hydrogenated (adding of hydrogen to the oil to "stabilize" it) a process which created trans fatty acids.
    About Hydrogenation:
Now for information of import about pure coconut oil:
Here is a nice little excerpt-
Here is the source page with notations and end notes that covers a very basic primer about pure coconut oil:

Tac, contact the seller directly (through their seller page). You may be able to buy direct and pick up at their brick & mortar. Just sayin'.

As Falcon15 stated, coconut oil is about the best oil for storing and for you health wise. I have some stored, not near enough yet but I'm working on it as with everything else.

For those that can't or don't want to spend $120 at one time or don't like ordering things on-line (I fit both those categories) - coconut oil can be found at your grocery store. I buy mine at Kroger, $6.00 (+ or -) for a 32 ounce container.

I find that storing certain food items in smaller containers works better for me. Plus I'm not opening a large quantity and exposing the whole thing to the elements.

$6 a quart is a pretty good price since there are 20 quarts to 5 gallons and they wanted $119 for 5 gallon bulk price and then add in shipping. Prices I have found online range from $4 to $8 for a pint for smaller quanities. I will do some looking at Asian markets and elsewhere before I make any major purchase. Thanks for all the input and info.

My kids want everything cooked in coconut oil. We live in the west, so we buy ours from azure which delivers natural foods once a month on a 18 wheeler from the west coast. The route they take runs about 20 miles from us so we drive over and meet the truck. The pricing is very competitive and I like the wholesome foods they carry. We also like ghee (clarified and cultured butter) a lot.

Walmart.com: Lou Ana: All Natural Cocnut Oil, 31.5 Fl Oz: Condiments, Sauces & Spices
Lou Ana Coconut oil available in Wal-Mart. I buy my small tubs at HEB - same brand, same size, about $7.50/31.5 Fluid oz. for camping etc. The big buckets are 640 Fluid Oz. (5 gallons) so lets do a price break comparison:

    31.5 Fl. oz. = roughly 2 pints
    640 Fl. oz. = 5 gallons exact

Lou Ana price per oz. - $0.23808 (etc., etc.) call it $0.24/oz.
Tropical Traditions price per oz. - $0.18593 (etc. etc.) call it $0.19/oz or $0.228125 call it $0.23/oz. (this second number INCLUDES shipping costs).

To me it is a better deal to have it shipped to me, and like all other things, YMMV.

I checked this yesterday after posting. It is Lou Ana brand for $5.34 for 31.5 ounces. I also think that is a pretty good value considering it's shelf life.

I'd also like to add that I was at SAM'S this evening and they do have some good deals on a lot of useful items but you really need to do some price checking. There were also many things I came across that were cheaper at Kroger's.

If I need it, in a PAW scenario, how 'healthy' it is is the least of my worries. I get plenty of exercise now... "later" can imagine only working several times harder.

I haven't bought any oil in a year... I have a source of free pork, and I cook off the meat and save the lard for later use the rest of the week. In a PAW situation, I'd still have a source of hogs, unless the golden horde descended... and reckon if they overwhelm my meager outpost, they'd take my cooking oil just as quick as they would the hogs.

Quite a few feral hogs also... I figure they'd outlast the local deer population if the horde did descend.

I 'tried' to stock coconut oil... GF kept finding it and making soap out of it...
