I've noticed that many people here and elsewhere mention their advancing age as a consideration in their prepping plans. I am 30 years old and I have met very few people my age that think about prepping, let alone actually do anything. Those that do have it on their radar are former military, like me. Have you also noticed the age disparity? Why do you think this is?

Isn't there a topic about age groups already?

I am 30 and have no military experience...I realize I might be in the minority.

What I do have is three kids and a lot of common sense. I have always had a nose for trouble and it is telling me that trouble is coming. I prep because I am inwardly driven to do so.

My generation and younger have forgotten how to take care of ourselves. I believe that this has been systematically planned. When SHTF...I don't even want to think about what is going to happen to a lot of friends and extended family because they rely on the system.

The elites will be laughing all the way to the bank as the poorest die first from being so out of shape they can't even make it to their local FEMA shelter.

    Catullus,
I am about the same as you. In my late 30's, two kids, no military experience. In my youth I "knew" what I wanted, when the military told me I couldn't do it for medical reasons I didn't bother signing up. In hindsight I wish I would have, oh well, not much I can do now but learn what I can.

I talked to a vendor in the corner store yesterday who was laid off from FEMA. He said FEMA is broke. He said that's what took so long with Katrina and IKE. Good luck on them helping you.
We are and always have been on our own. Keep stocking up.

Silly people.... FEMA isn't broke.... our President can always print more money.
No military experience for me. It's my little voice that told me things weren't as they would have us believe and well... I don't want my family ending up in the Chicago Bear's Football stadium receiving handouts.

Sorry. There may be. I'm new to the forum. Do you have a link?

I just moved to the Chicago area. Any good gun shops, surplus stores or organizations I should know about?

I started prepping in my mid-twenties; I am now 55 and half-way there. I do not believe you can ever get more than half way there.

I think many of us older folks prep for a different reason and in a different way than younger folks. We've reached an age that we have seen plenty of reason, but know we are not going to reproduce or live forever, so it is about the little what-ifs we know by experience could happen and prepare accordingly. Having said that, I see lots of folks my age and older with their head in the sand, living like there is no tomorrow, thinking everything bad will somehow bypass them. Let the next generation worry about their debt.

Plainswalker> I avoid Chicago like the plague.... I only venture there if I have to for a conference or symposium. I'm pretty much a retired stay at home mom these days with virtually zip nadda no knowledge of firearms except that when we pull the trigger... they go bang so.... I truly can't help you with gun shops but I strongly suspect somebody here can. ;) I do know a handful of military surplus stores. One's in a town called Waukegan and another is just over the border into WI in a town called Kenosha. You'd probably have better luck trolling your local Salvation Army or GoodWill store. The military surplus stores don't appear to have the inventory they did just 10 years ago when our boys were heavily into scouting programs. Quite frankly.... they're getting wiped out by folk who must live close enough to frequent them regularly. As far as other organizations, could you please be more specific? I know there's a few events that might be of interest to you off the top of my head. One being the Milwaukee expose for alternative energy. I don't recall the exact name of it however I could get it for you. The other being a primitive skills organization. Other than that, I garden... put up produce and volunteer locally. You're more than welcome to visit my home and I'll share what I've learned with you about growing my own food sustainably. I'm certainly no expert however I've come a long way comparatively speaking. There was a day when my life was so hectic I made restaurant reservations instead of meals so I would be honored to share my vegetable seed and locally native plants to help get you going. I could also send you home with organic compost and fresh eggs.

I am only 13 years old so I cant vote in the pole. You may want to add a slot for 17 and younger, there may not be that many that qualify for that age group, but you would be surprised by the number of young people concerned about the state of the economy and todays society. Great idea for this pole.

I can say I am 56 for another week yet lol.
Hubby and I started on food storage back in our 20's. We were both raised being able to do for ourselves.
Dh even did cement sidewalks with his mom at their home in Ohio lol. And many more things. His mom even made her own apple cider vinegar n a 55 gallon barrel every yr.

43 YO here. Been prepping for 7 years. It came in handy when I was without a job for nearly a year. To conserve cash we ate our preps without restocking. Sold our popup camper, full sized van so we could make the house payment.

finally got a job 3 years ago that I could start to replace some of my preps.

What i found was, I don't like mac 'n cheese anymore, but i still like spam :).
bullion cubes in with the beans when you are soaking them, make 'em taste better.

and what i thought was 6 mos worth of preps for family of 5 was more like 3 months. I had plenty of sugar, salt and spices though.

I'm adding more pasta to the list. I want 100 pounds of each: beans, pasta, rice, sugar, salt, vinegar, oil, lard, dried fruits, dried veggies per person. over kill? maybe maybe not. time will tell.

First, I love the idea that new members post ;) Also, I don't know where the other age group topic is, perhaps Ghrit could find it. It's titled something obscure or not in plain English I can remember. Your title is best. ;) It works fine with Google search, too.

Second, why on earth would you move to Chicago? Work? I am so sorry, brother. I wish you the very best of luck, but Chicago ranks right up there with NYC, in fact, in many ways it's worse. Terrible gun restrictions there and crime and drugs are rampant.

49 years young, ha ha, but feel like 70 when working on firewood for the winter. Been prepping for 12 years with no plan of stopping anytime soon. No military experience, but worked with them for 20 years on electronic equipment.

i am 51 years old and a military vet and i started in the military after something my wife asked me one day and then it went from there ..

iam basically prepping for a comfortable life after the event to keep my standard of what i call my basic level of comfort after the event for iam a person who does not need much to be happy a good meal here and there and good book to read and place to laydown on and sleep and place to go to the bathroom and iam pretty happy with my life ..

so iam have the design of the shelter to keep me safe along with some basic power needs for my comfort and with basic needs of a place to live out my life in comfort with a place for showering and cooking and some basic entertainment that i have now of reading a book or a watching a movie here or there or listening to music here or there ..

While I did post above, I did not state my age, except in the poll, which doesn't reflect who voted what way. I'm 64 and a Navy Vietnam Vet. It could have had some connection to that experience that got me started in prepping, but I been at it a long time now. I noticed no one under 30 or over 70 has voted yet, but that might only mean they haven't seen the poll, are not able to vote, or just plain think they can't afford to prep. One person admitted to being too young to vote because the poll didn't include their age group. When I was young, teenage young, I was in the Boy Scouts, so yeah, I thought about stuff like that. Root thoughts like that have to have their beginning, my upbringing might have left an impression on me too. No point here in writing a life history. [2c]
