Survival in Japan and Nuclear Radiation

    So we are stocking up on Iodine and Seaweed to go with our survival packs we bought a while ago from quakecare.

    my own opinion, since 1 and 3 blew up, i doubt they have the manpower or equipment to keep both cool enough to prevent meltdown. 6 of the workers were injured on this latest one. if 2 goes, i doubt they will be able to keep any of them cool. there is also a 4, but they havent discussed it at all. wonder if that one even has fuel in it.

    Anyway,staying put for now,IAEA says radiation levels outside the plants are slightly above normal.

    Yeah, they are going to downplay this as much as they can for as long as they can.

    Make no mistake, this is not looking good at all. Get very far away.

    Pretty clear that's what they have been doing from the start of this... no matter people are saying...

    Yup... imagine when San Andreas, New Madrid and or Yellowstone go... hope that's thousands of years from now.... but I gotta be honest... it would seem like everything points to our turn next.... [boozingbuddies]

    Didn't you say that your wife is preggo? One thing we were taught in our radiation safety training is that young children and more importantly fetus are very vulnerable to the affects of radiation since their bodies are still growing and developing.

    Yes she is due in a couple weeks so we cannot fly,if I had my own plane we would be gone already but she cannot fly so the biggest thing I need know is something that detects unusual levels of radiation like that nukalert keychain or something similar.

    Just stick close to the local news, and if they Report a Containment Breach, move away from the area, perpendicular to the wind direction, as far and as fast as you can. Score the Potassium Iodide Tabs anywhere you can, and make sure, YOUR WIFE TAKES THEM, at the ADULT Dosage, period. If you are less than 40, you need them as well. Your Little Bundle of Joy, is specifically vulnerable to Active Iodine Poisoning, and it DOES cross the Placental Barrier. MY wife is an RN that specializes in High Risk Labor and Delivery, and she is, as I type, on a Mission, with "Doctors without Boarders" teaching her Skillset to MDs and RNs at Medical Facilities all across Canada. This is her advice to you folks. so good Luck to you from us Alaskan Monkeys.

    Talking to travelocity and trying to get flight out for tomorrow or next day. Had tickets for late april to return but trying to get them bumped up.

    Excellent - Here's hoping it works but I imagine you are one of many. Don't disregard Plan B in case the travel doesn't work out. Bear offered great advice - take it.

    uses common items and is easily built (son built one for a science project...)

    Where he is located should not be bad for radiation... the fires will put mostly the heavier alpha type radiation into the smoke unless the pile goes critical... most of thjis type contamination can be washed away and will not hurt the family... (unless they eat it) it will also fall out of the atomosphere fairly quickly... Prevailing wind patterns are west to east at this time so most fall out should be in the ocean... This is based upon a few assumptions.... 1. the graphite moderators do not catch fire... 2. any steam vented is vented through the appropiate filters in a controlled manner... 3. info we are getting is accurate..

    Just my guesstimation based on knolwedge garnered the hard way.... ymmv

    1) That type of plant does not use graphite for moderation, it's water only.
    2) I don't think the filters are operative based on the H2 explosions.
    3) Not a chance.

    If primary containment is indeed breached, we need gentle winds to carry the particulates seaward.

    I am pretty sure that even if the core melts it can't achieve criticality, there are enough reaction poisons in the core that it should not happen. There is a geometric arrangement in the operating core for control purposes, and that arrangement will not survive melting. TMI (granted, a different plant entirely) melted and did not go critical.

    Oversimplified definitions:
    Critical - neutron generation replaced 1 for 1, i.e.,
    self sustaining reaction. Just enough to keep temperature in the core constant.
    Subcritical - not self sustaining, decay heat only (and all other things being equal, cooling off.)
    Prompt critical - Where the neutron population exceeds the ability to control the reaction. Otherwise known as a nuclear explosion.

    Note that water moderated reactors have a neat control feature called "negative temperature coefficient" meaning that as temp in the water coolant rises, the rate of neutron generation drops to hold the temp constant. So,again all else equal, they are stable if the heat is carried off. That same effect works if the water drops and is replaced by steam. BUT!!! Water is a far better heat removal medium than steam. Which means that decay heat will still build up with the potential to melt core materials.
