I was reading an article the other day about unorthodox fire starters, one suggestion was burning your underwear. Though this may be good in the short term when you are stationary and awaiting rescue; it could pose a problem if one is attempting to remain mobile or is to be stranded for a long time. What are your thoughts?

We did that in Iraq when we were on an air assault mission which took over a month and we were essentially in the middle of nowhere without the ability to shower. I was happy to burn my underwear! [CRC]

Ya but then you have to ship them and that would be expensive. To get these fire starters all you need to do is eat a can of beans.

I bought one of these Duraflame - Fire Logs, Fireplace Logs, Firestarters, and Charcoal Briquets
then i cut it up into chunks. each little chunk burns hot and starts easily with dryer lint or any other fine kindling. I also use the chunks to power one of these little pocket stoves MIL-SPEC Surplus Folding Pocket Stove so they basically serve two purposes. They also help get fires started if the wood is kinda damp.
They stink when they burn though, but i'm sure it doesnt stink as bad as burning underwear LOL[whiteflag]

Had a SEAL Friend, give me an idea that they use, in a pinch.... Team Comm Unit Battery and small patch of Steel Wool... 9 Vdc Bat works as well.... Lots of possibilities, in that arena....

I wouldn't think burning something that you need for health like socks or underwear would be a good idea, nothing like a chaffed penis, LOL.

I like the idea of compacting cotton balls with Vaseline into a tube, you can get quite a few in a small container.

    Hard To Beat

It is hard to beat the ease, the low cost and the effectiveness of vaseline saturated cotton balls. Too bad 35mm film is obsolete. All those little film containers would have been perfect storage for them.

You can still get them from film developing places if you ask. A lot of photographers still use film.

i just pop a cotton ball into my jar of petroleum jelly and walla instant fire and it burns for a few minutes . i light my fireplace with them all the time. they even make nice little room candles if you light one or two and put them in a cup or ashtray

If you ever use a cold remedy called Airborne, the tubes they are sold in make great stashes for vaseline cotton balls...

them tubes sound pretty good.don't they sell vasolene in a squeaze tube?i keep a box in the bed of my rhino with just about everything .i don't keep any vasolene in it but i do have a full large bottle of zippo fluid and a hand full of lighters and cotton balls.when we go ride and someone needs something they always send them to me.i have never ran into someone needing something on the trail that i didn't have in my box.better to be prepaired than to wish you had been prepaired.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that. Of course I had to try it out just now. Something else I can do with all the bags of cotton balls I stocked up on years ago, lol.
