Just a note about a little project I've been working on. I got two 8ft peices of 6 inch PVC pipe cut them into 4ft sections along with 4 solid end caps and 4 end caps with a threaded plug. I glued the the caps on both ends and removed the threaded plug and taped the end. I then bought the spray on bed liner gave each tube a good heavy coat and let dry. I then place some paper towels in one of the tubes and put a film of blue glue (used for gasket on vaule pan covers) placed the threaded plug in let it set and dry for an hour. I tied a brick to the bottom of it and placed it into the lake for three day's everything was still dry. placed some spunge in it with a glass coffee cup in the center and dropped it about 20ft onto pavement. tube bounced didnt break or crack and the coffee cup was still in one peice. This might be a bit of an over kill for storage but after I was done testing it. I feel better about under ground storage.
That is another one of my worries but I ordered a bulk size box of the packets that they put in shoe's, leather, and they are supose to be good for long term storage of other things like meatal parts or computer parts. I've been trying to work on a way to put some type of valve to where I could pull out most of the air as well.
Use a Dry Nitrogen or Argon Gas flood before you do the final Seal...... that will displace the oxygen, and most of the moisture from the Pipe......
6" is doable. Some disassembly of firearms will be necessary. Heavy weight durable bags that can be vacuum sealed are available thru "cheaper than dirt" and others. I went with 8", and with fittings etc it cost me an arm and a leg. Cosmoline or something similiar is advised. Ammo, cleaning kit, degreaser, etc, ziploc packed weapon info. Be real sure you have it well plotted as to where it is, for recovery. . You might want to read both "Sunset, and Sunrise at Coffin Rock" in our reading room.
I was reading about those bags in cheaper than dirt have you used any I was looking for some info on them earlier today. For the most part Im planning on using them for ammo, MRE's and survival Items such as fire sticks, glow sticks and so on. Then as far as weapons Im going to work on some predug holes and stack maybe coffee cans in it and place them into the downside of a hillside so they won't fill with water leave a wire or rope connected to the cans place about 6 inches of dirt on top so I can pull them out when needed. Have tubes made up and when SHTF and Big Brother comes knocking I can place weapons in tube and make deposit's into the First National Alpha Dog Dirt Bank Of The Free America
You can also use 8 -12" sewer piping and seal them also that will accommodate a rifle with scope. Drill and put a bicycle fill valve in the end cap to fill with nitrogen after sealing. Throw scrap metal over it like car parts or old rusted farm equipment to hinder radar.
Look's something like this.??? I'm pretty sure that a Mossberg 500 won't fit in a 6''... Unless you remove the stock first...8'' would be better... Just my opinion... ccc...
plant them vertically with the screw cap up dont have to dig out the whole thing just enuff to open the top end attach ammo or other small items to a cord thats attached to the cap
That is a great Idea this would also allow yo to pre plant the tubes, So all you have to do is drop in and cover.
Well, the 'Just in Case' kit (a Mossberg 500a, pistol grip, shoulder stock, gimmicky 'survival' tin) comes in a 6" tube, with room to spare. It might not fit if you started slapping on rails and lights and other garbage (or a shoulder stock with attached pistol grip), but the gun easily fits.
I had planned on burring a few and leaving the empty to make drops if had to. I think that would save time in a SHFT
including 02 absorbers and silica gel (moisture absorbent) would be more adventageous ..... both would continue to absorb and nothing to leak compared to purging & replacing with inert gases ......
Nope...Nothing fancy here..a pistol grip will work...However even a stripped down standard stock is tight...and here's proof...
I also plan on attempting to use the sray on bed liner on a couple 50 cal ammo cans for short term storage. A friend of mine was talking about using the posthole digger on the back of his tractor so it would be easier to use 4ft and poss. 5ft strands of pipe.
Spray some silicon on the rubber gasket on the can, let dry and put some graffiti on your finger and run around the gasket .That with keep a lot longer and it will stay sealed .
Thanks I'll try that I was wondering about the gasket and what I could do to help them keep a good seal.
