Abandoned summer campground

I got great news. A friend from church is going to show me an abandoned summer camp. Has cabins and a lodge. He said he found some shirts that indicate it last used in the 80's. I'm trying to find something about it on the internet but have as yet failed.

Him and I are going out Friday. It's supposed to have a river nearby, and the buildings are in decent condition and standing, and judging by the lack of graffiti and hidden access, not a lot of people know about it. I'm hoping this will be the perfect bug-out spot. Mile off a mountain highway 45 minutes from my residence.

Makes you wonder what else is out there in the BLM.

I live near the Adirondacks and often camp and hike up there. I find old logging camps and line cabins from time to time. Found an old Chevy van once. There are old mining facilities and even abandoned towns.

There are rumors that Upstate NY has a lot of the old air defense roads dating back to WWII. I have yet to find any, though.

Here in AZ. while out hiking, you oftentimes run into old abandoned mining towns/camps. Problem here is that mosttimes there is no water avail.

I've been hoping to run in to something like what yall are talking about here, I would even be willing to buy it if the price was right. Our state is doing what they are calling a clean up but what they are doing is going around finding these plases deeming them unsafe and ripping them down and taking the properties as state and county property. They probally know something we don't and will be making money off the land for development. Because there has been two places I offered to by and take down my self then build a camp and the location wasn't any good for anything else to far off beaten path but they refused like it had gold soil.

Are these places that once upon a time were concessions on public land? That would explain the troubles buying them up.

I used to go hiking about an hour North of Speculator, NY with a friend of mine. Once we were about 3.5 hour hike Northwest when we came to an area that was quite confusing. It is at the bottom of a huge ravine. The ground goes from soft to hard as asphalt with vegitation growing on it. The area was hundreds of feet long and almost as wide with very young vegitation growing on it. There is an area that was obviously manmade as a lot of the surface was crumbling concrete. Then there is a building that is hollowed out inside but looked like it would be two or three floors high. It is about 20x40 at the base of it. On top of one of the ridgelines to the North is a notch cut out of the face of the cliff that I am totally guessing is 10'x30' long.
We ended up setting up camp there so we could look around but we really didnt find anything beyond that. No garbage left behind or anything.

These would be great places to hit with a decent metal detector.

I know there's an old mine up there. Not sure exactly where, but I'd not be surprised if that was a storage facility. I've been wrong before though. If you can remember where, I'd sure like to see it. Perhaps we could even figure out what the place used to be. I'd not be surprised by what we found. The old Atomic Gas in Mayfield has concrete pilings behind it, or did as late as 1986.

I will pull some maps and see if I can figure out the general area. It has been 15+ years since I have been out there. Been spending the last 6 years working my current lands and before that I shifted from Adirondaks to the Northern PA game lands. Let me see what I can dig up, I will give my friend a call and ask him if he can give me a better idea of where we were because it was his father's cabin that we would set up base camp in.

Ya need to start looking at the tax sales on the list. Some of us have done fairly well with those over the years. Look for the places that have good timber on them,it takes a year and a day before they are yours to keep. But since your at the court house a lot just keep checking for something that suits ya !!!

I was very aware about that today as I went there. The dark rooms, creaky stairs, and shut walk-ins, I was expecting a dead body or a raccoon around every corner.

It's not a perfect bug-out spot. The buildings are not made for the winter, and it's up near the peak of a mountain. Access is pretty easy if you know where it is, as well as a hiking trail that goes through, this is both a positive and a negative. The road would be easy to make inaccessible, but clearable. The buildings are in relatively good shape, as well as the water and gas infrastructure, though I don't think I could make it operable. If SHTF in the spring or summer, I'd gladly camp and use it while the worst of it blows over. There is a stream very close with moving water year round.

No pictures, my phone is very ghetto.

It's up in the San Bernardino National Forest. Along the road to Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear.

It might surprise you how easy it would be to button the place up for winter without drawing too much attention. I've seen buildings here in the Adirondacks I could get away with reinforcing and making weather tight without drawing too much attention. Got coordinates so we could get a Google Earth view?
