Linux Mint 12

I bought a Dell Mini 10 yesterday and put Mint 12 on it, since the screen is small, I decided to use classic GNOME and removed both of the panels. Put on a cairo dock, and I really like this build! It is pretty quick...I also added Chromium because it is a lot faster than FF...


I struggled between using Mint 9, 11, or 12. There is not much difference between 11 and 12 accept for the better driver support, better artwork and GNOME 3... The reason I still like 9 is because of the LTS.

 

Got around to testing 12 today, but didn't install it. And actually 9, 10, & 11 are very similar. Not sure if I'll be upgrading to 12 now that I've seen it. Old habits die hard.

 

The more I use 12 the more I like it.

 

I'll probably give it another look one of these cold winter days. Kinda busy right now to go through all the hassle of upgrading the whole system.

 

Just googled that GNOME3... looks really nice.

 

I am slowly loosing control of my mint 12 machine. I can't unlock my user account, The wallpaper is a blank screen now and I can't change it at all, the battery meter has been removed from the panel, when I logged in this morning my control panel had been moved back to the top and the useless bottom panel was back and on the top again. This machine will not turn off unless I hold the off button. The shutdown menu has been removed. This has been happening slowly and I don't understand why. I am going to go back to LMDE. That should work better with this machine anyway. Very strange and I have NEVER had anything like this happen before. It's almost like I have a virus...

 

Thanks Yoldering. The test run of Mint 12 on my old eMachine out in my barn, (without installing, just testing the live DVD), got similar results to what you describe. While I also tested it on my laptop I did not like the two panel thing, looked too much like something I'd seen before with another distro of Linux and had rejected. I was very happy with Mint 9, 10, and 11, but do not like the appearance and operation of Mint 12 and do not plan to install it. Even Mint 11 seems to use most of the memory on a 2 gig machine. The problem you are having, could it be low memory?

My main desktop is running Mint 10 and so is my main laptop, but I'm running Mint 11 Debian on the old eMachine in the barn, and it is close to memory capping out, but very stable. On a little netbook, I'm duel booting Mint 11 - 32 bit standard addition with windows XP, mostly use it in Linux, XP is there for those few programs I use windows for.

In my mind, I thought the release of Mint 12 was a little premature. In the past the final release of a new distro usually came about six months into the year of it's name with Mint. Not real excited about the changes made with Mint 12.

 

The problem with Mint 10 and 11 is they will become obsolete in the next couple of few months and you will be forced to either go back to Mint 9 or upgrade to Mint 12 or stick with an obsolete system.. I hope they iron out these issues, before Mint 13!

 

Mint 12 would probably work for me, if I must, but I don't like a top panel and do not like screen icons cluttering up my screen picture of my motorcycle. I place any frequently used program options next to the menu on the bottom panel. The live DVD did not allow me to play around with those particular things I liked about Mint. I may switch to Mint 11 Debian - which is stable and can be set to auto upgrade as Melbo posted the how-to on that option.

As for the direction Mint has taken with 12, I'm very disappointed. To much glitter for what an OS should be, not like we are trying to compete with Windows or anything. I may try it on my old laptop just to see what I can do with it after it is installed, that may unlock some of the settings I desire in an OS. Then if I don't like what I see, it will be Dban time and back to an earlier distro.

 

Once you have Mint 12 installed when you go to log in for the first time, you can click on the gear symbol and choose GNOME classic with no effects. Once you are logged in, you can (Shift+right click, go to properties, and remove the bottom panel, and move the top panel to the bottom. It seems to fork great. My system worked great until I somehow messed it up.

(By the way, I can now change the back ground image!!!)

 

I dumped Mint 12...more and more things were going wrong...I am back using Mint 9 and I forgot how nice it is! Mint 9 boots about 10 seconds faster than 12 did.

 

I installed 11 LMDE on the old eMachine I keep in the barn. Cold out there now, but it's very stable even on an old machine. For now, I going to stay with 10 as it is a lot of a hassle to convert to yet another OS, but it is looking like LMDE may be the direction I go. There are a couple things with 9 that keeps me from going back to it. Even when 10 runs out in April '12, or whatever, it will still be better on my computer than what I've seen from 12.

 

So Melbo, based on the many previous posts, I downloaded and made a DVD of Mint11. I haven't installed yet.

Your last post says that Mint's Cinnamon overcomes the issues in Mint12 that people don't like and allows the customization that Mint9-11 users are accustomed to?
