Just curious how many of you could and would eat bugs to survive?

I have eaten a variety of bugs and can't say that I would recommend any of them.

I wonder if people who are allergic to shellfish are also allergic to eating bugs?

Oh lordy, I can see into the future, I know what is coming next....a Cookbook for bugs, including Slow Cooker recipes, no doubt. Well, as a (mostly) vegetarian, that's one cookbook I can turn my back on, thank goodness. If and when it happens. I bet some of you guys could come up with some interesting ideas for recipes. How about Grasshopper Goulash, Centipede Casserole, Gnats au Gratin, Monarch Caterpillars with Boll Weevil Dumplings. You know our motto about Preparing Now and Not Waiting for TSTHTF. Yuk and ugh.

The problem with shellfish "generally speaking", is the amount of iodine they contain...Anyone with a thyroid condition can testify to that!

I actually got a cook book for bugs for a Christmas gift a few years back. Most reciepes were for Meal Worms, Bees and Bee larvae, Grasshoppers, Ants. Most were baked in one manner or another and many crumbled and used as filler or seasoning; Pass the bug shaker, please?

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

I had some in Hong Kong. Fried scorpions on a stick, and some grasshoppers. Can't say I was particularly impressed. Better than starving though...

Have to draw the line at cave spiders though. I would not do well on Fear Factor.

Well, when I started Prepping, I didn't realize that I would have to take Bugging out etc., literally! That Cookbook, yikes, imagine....no doubt the author had to test all those recipes personally, my blood runs cold.

I recall my young Uncle Sonny, who was captured at the age of 18 at Dunkirk during WWII and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. When he returned at the end of the war, he told us stories about the hardships and he said that there was not a rat, cat or mouse left anywhere inside the camp (he didn't say anything about eating bugs though)! They were reduced to eating bark from trees and even grass (with dire consequences). Turned out, when they were rescued and the camp was investigated by the troops, storage sheds were found, full of Red Cross parcels which the Germans had stored rather than give them to the men. Such cruelty. Sadly, he died three weeks after returning home from his ordeal....he got pneumonia and in his weakened state, could not overcome it.

So you see the kinds of things we are all headed for when the food supply runs out.....well, maybe the bugs aren't looking so bad to me after all!

Seacowboy: Did you try any of the recipes in your book? Maybe you should start...be our tester and if you like them (yeah, sure!) we will all buy a copy!

I took a survival course when I was in college. For our mid-term we were allowed to bring a coffee can, a knife, and since a cold front was moving in - a plastic tarp into the woods. We were separated and left for the weekend. During that weekend, I learned to appreciate parboiled violets with a healthy sprinkling of earthworms for protien. I won't say it didn't send a shiver down my gullet, but that "stew" helped keep me going over a pretty nasty weekend.

I have one thing to say about the cook book. Oh HELL NO! I would have to have eaten all of the pets and maybe a few of the neighbors first. Soylent Green anyone?

Fishing worms (earthworms) are great--well kinda. I grab one end and squeeze the chit out the other end, toss onto a hot rock, and wahla--filet mignon.
