I like my Mosin Nagant M-44 for my trunk gun...It's a little too long and heavy for a pack gun though..

A long barrel Ruger Mark 2 would be a good pack gun..

    FEG.

IMO, a trunk gun is a get me home gun not a foraging gun.

I like the Mech-Tech not only becouse it takes your pistols mags, but uses the frame of your pistol as well.
As I said before. It can be shipped to your door, leaving very little paper trail. It's classified an accessory, and not a firearm.

I keep a Model 60 .22LR and a Ruger Mark II in a hard case in the trunk of my car, along with 2 boxes of CCI Mini Mags. It isn't a take-down rifle but it is utterly reliable and I am accurate with it. That counts for more with me than it being small

My AR15 with collapsible stock and 16" barrel gets surprisingly compact. With the bull barrel it's a little heavier than I might like, but it's accuracy is a good trade off in that dept.

For a secondary choice, I have a little Mossberg semi-auto 22lr, I forget the model number right now, it was built back in the 40's or 50's, has a fold down handle in the front and is a compact little rifle too. It's very accurate, very reliable, and will function well with almost any 22lr round I put in it.

My reasoning for staying with these choices as opposed to a specialized compact rifle? I shoot both of these rifles regularly, so I am very familiar with them and their capabilities. My concern with getting a dedicated purpose rifle like some of those shown earlier in this thread is that I wouldn't be as proficient with them without having to make time to be so. I'm not dogging anyone elses' choices, just relating mine and why I chose to go that route.

First thing I would do would be to check your state laws concerning having a long arm in your vehicle. I know in PA you do not want to have a loaded long arm in your vehicle.

That being said, you may want to consider something like an AR pistol or an AK pistol such as the Draco since it's a pistol and if you have a LTCF you can have the AR/AK pistols loaded and ready to go.

  7. Thanks for all the advice. I will have to sit down and really look at going beyond my original intentions of having a .22 with a bug out bag.

I have a CCW; however, the magazine is not in the rifle when driving.

AR and AK pistols are "for fun" type guns. Their best applications would be similar to Secret Service type protection. The reason you don't see them in that role is there are much better choices.

They are pistols which shoot rifle ammunition; not included is a rifle's sights, power, or ability to shoot fast and accurately to 150 meters easily. Where these "pistols" fit in well are the really up close and personal activities. Which is where a survivalist does not belong.

A survivalist is one who does the same as the military in the same situation; which is break contact and run. When the zombies are breaking your car windows to drag you out it is a very different story... LOL ;)

Btw, I love "for fun" guns and shoot one as often as it's owner brings it along. Even when I am not shooting it's caliber; I bring ammunition for it. However, when it comes time to shoot to see who buys lunch; no one takes it to the dance. ;)

    I have a Mossberg JIC 500 Mariner...
I picked up a few of these to sell at gun shows... they didnt sell as well as I hoped they would, still it's not a bad set up works great as a boat or truck gun

    52340.

EDIT to Add... Mossburg sells these as what you see in the photo... they call it their JIC (Just In Case) line

add the interchangeable Butt-Stock, and it would be even better, for a Bug-Out weapon. Hopefully, It would fit in the canister, as well ......... YMMV.....

Plus 1000! You won't need over four magazines with you, and the thing can fold up to around 21" OAL for stuffing into your BOB. A WASR10/63 will cost less than several of the guns listed, and can do most or all of the jobs that the others can. You can carry more 5.54 than 7.62, but that is a personal choice. It's reliability is legendary.

was thinking the same thing myself... prob is if I add one of the common folder's to that Mossy then it is a Tad too long for the tube it came with... not really that big a prob as I could just buy a new section of longer PVC and reuse the caps.... course a smart fellow wouldn't need to buy this set up... long enough section of PVC and a couple of clean out caps... and you can safely tube/waterproof any rifle of any length...

he's another tip... did ya know they pack motorcycles in silica gel when they ship them... same smart fellow might go a make friends with said motorcycle shop and owner and come away with buckets and buckets of free silica gel they might have otherwise tossed in a dumpster

But what would an fat old man like myself know about being smart??? ;)

I might go slightly cheaper and cap one end, put a cleanout plug on the other. Then, instead of making it obvious what's in it, I think I might letter on the outside something like "used condoms" or "dried smoked rat steaks for last ditch dinner" or equally repulsive verbiage. Orange? Nah.

Yugo ak under folder in a 5.56x45, kel-tec sub 2000 in 9mm. Since both are nato rounds pretty easy to find anywhere. Also the henry survival 22. 3 of the most common rounds in most house holds and stores.

Anything that goes bang! Firearms are a tool after all.... much like a fishing pole, wrench, net, crossbow, trap, etc. They're a means to an end.
