OK, lets see who is preparred and who is not. This is only a test or game if you will.

Due to a very large sunspot, the entire grid all over the world has gone down. There is no electricity, no tv, radio, internet etc. In fact, a lot of you have overslept due to your elec. alarm clocks not waking you up. When you wake up, you FEEL something is wrong, but are not aware of the feelings and the erie quietness around you.

When you open the drapes, you also notice that no cars are moving except the kid down the street with his old jalopy . You see a neighbor across the street standing outside looking around and you walk out to talk to him. Neither one of you have a clue what is happening. You are completely dumbfounded. Now, what do you do ?

You first move into OPSEC mode, return inside and clue your family in Then try to determine the problem and your next move.

Having read "Lights Out" and other EMP fiction, quickly confirm no unshielded electrical device is working. No? OK EMP or CME event.

First, wait for dark - if it is an ongoing solar event, daytime is the worst time to check any electronics. Once darkness falls, light a single lantern, open my "Faraday boxes" and test all the equipment inside. Crank and tune emergency radio to local station, if any are on air. Second, get the house secured. Third, swap out the battery, solenoid, master cylinder, and plug wires for the spares stored in a "Faraday Box" and in and try to start the truck (1978 Ford). Contact my Alpha group on comms equipment stored in box. Open my EOP, go to the section labeled EMP, and start with my designated part of the plan. Once Alpha Group is assembled at the designated place, make our way to BoL and button her up. Begin life at BoL.

I think it would seem like a normal power outage then I would get my phone to see what time it is. That would be a WTF moment. Then finding out it every thing with batteries is also out. That would be the telling factor. I would at that point get with as many neighbors as I can to let them know whats going on and collect as much info as possible and reassuring them things will be ok if we stick together. This is to try to control panic.

Then get people to start filling containers with water we live 20 miles from town and are on county water once the water tank is empty that is it without a working pump. New or information would likely be very slow in coming as well as unreliable.

Next would be set up security and start taking stock of what our group has in supplies and man/woman power.

Dogfood. Is your county water supply on a gravity fed system or does it need a pump to maintain pressure as most would do ? Your phone would not be working either as even though it is a minute amount of elec. it does need some to work. And the phone switching stations require power also. By this time, people have already gone to the grocery stores that live close and find them closed. No lights or cash registers working . Inside the store , the managers/owners and employees are loading everything that they can move in a basket and are going to attempt and walk home with them.

Also, your batteries should be fine.

The water is pumped into a water tower so pressure is there but no more will be pumped up with out power. I know my phone will not work its a cell and EMP will kill anything electronic. I don't think anyone will be going to a store closest one is five miles away and with no vehicles working people will stay put here. Batteries will be ok but most thing that use them will be fried.

I don't plan to bug out unless I have not choice. I would like to get an older truck/jeep that I get working after an EMP or would just be easier to maintain in a after shtf.

W-e-l-l....first off, I'd go to the bathroom. Top priority no matter what the emerg. Then I'd check my phone and then the highway underpass to see if their lights are on (if they are out, then it's more serious than just a small local thingy). THEN, I'd get out my hobo stove and make myself a cup of tea while I think things through. If it's an EMP, well, there's no rush is there.....we're all up the creek not only without a paddle, most of us won't even have a canoe!

Love the answers from you guys.....would any of you like to relocate to my house, haha and lol!! I am sadly lacking in true survivalmonkey grit here. Only my grandson shows any interest and he is just beginning to acquire the knowledge that you men have obviously spent lifetimes learning. Bless him anyway, he is a real comfort just by his moral support for our efforts if nothing else! He does love collecting gear though and our kits are beginning to fill out with lots of interesting bits and pieces.

Well, just you being here shows me that you are awake and willing to learn. The trick with extra food and then more food, is when you need a can of pork and beans for instance is to buy two cans. Try doing that and in a month or two you will be amazed at how much "extra" you will have put away. And Granny, don't forget to buy extra tp. You will always find that a useful addition to the storage area's.

Since I generate ALL my own power, and am not on a Grid, even if there were this GIANT Solar Flare, postulating that it would take out ALL my Electronics, is just a Pipe Dream, and NOT based in FACT, as published in the Scientific Journals. Especially considering that it was postulated to have happened, while the Sun was on the other side of the rock I live on, essentially isolating "Me" from whatever SuperFlare may have happened. HOWEVER, I have EMP Proof Stored backups for the essential VRs for my twin Gensets, as well as Mechanically Regulated Gensets that can be used to provide all the Power I normally use. HF Radio Comms would be out, until the Ionosphere settled down, but all my local Comms, would be fine, as EMP Proof Stored Backups will work just fine for ANY of the Radios that may (Not likely) have been damaged.

The Solar issue, just isn't a viable World Collapse Senerio, when compared to the Nuclear EMP senerio, but in that senerio, I am so far from any place where and EMP Device would be targeted, and since I live in a 3500' deep Fjord, most of any major propagating EMP Wave would likely pass right overhead, with very little impulse reaching down into the Fjord.

...... YMMV..... but an interesting Idea, anyway.....

I understand that Bruce, but, do you have enough fuel ?

I am the local Fuel Distributer, and my Tank Farm is refilled by the last barge of every season.... that is roughly 250K USG of Diesel #2, 30k USG of Diesel #1, and 20K USG of 100/110 Low Leaded Gasoline. So yea, I have plenty of fuel, should things get serious..... ..... YMMV....

Is there a water source nearby? Water can be pumped w/o electricity, if need be. However, the distance and/or vertical lift needed can be an obstacle.

How's bout you pretend you are not as fortunate as some of us. I would imagine most here do not have the financial capability to be as prepared as we would like, which would include myself. Since I know that I'm not going to be in a position anytime soon to change that, I'm gonna have to rely on the knowledge and skills I've acquired over the years in the trades and elsewhere.(y)

I hope the above did not come across wrong or as criticism because that was not my intent. I thought this was a mental excercise. I do not mean any disrespect towards you whatsoever, far from it. I forgot to put that in my posting.

    1. Determine what the heck is going on.
    2. Secure all paramaters of property.
    3. Check on neighbors.
    4. Have a Beer while its still cold.
    5. Determine a plan for fresh food to maxmize the use. wrap freezer with as many blancets as I can find.
    6. If any city water preshure exsists fill up everything I can find that holds water.
    7. If its cold build some sort of room indooors about the size of a tent so a oil lamp would keep you warm.

And dont forget to Pray, cant hurt nothing.

It is just that the Senerio that was postulated, is not based in Fact, so it doesn't really have significance, in the Real World. As I have stated before, I come from 4 Generations of Prep'ers... and it is what I was raised with.... I have, what I have, simply because I have been working at it, for 60+ years, and have always looked for a situation, like I live in, for most of my life. I realize that others aren't going to be as prepared for WHATEVER comes, and that is why I share my Knowledge Base, freely, and without reservation. It is one way, that I choose to GIVE Back, to the community that I interact with. .... YMMV....

I do not think I wrote my intent the way I meant it to come across, sorry about. I have learned much from you, I apologize if you took it differently than I had intended. You have much to share and I enjoy your writings and life experiences that you have shared.

BT being right about it no being possible from the sun is true. A nuke could do this from us trying to shoot in down. I don't know how likely it is then but has been talked about by the people involved in the anti-missile program.

Yes there is a lake about 400 yards from my house. I was a weapons Sergeant and cross trained in engineering. I know to build a water treatment system but this takes time and a secure place to work. I try to take advantage of all sources of supply starting with to easiest to acquire.

I consider water to be one of the most major of issues, if one intends to survive. This post was only started to help most of you think. Imagine if it happened right now ? I have however read a few articles about some of the bigger sun spots that could in fact do just this. Wheather they are true or not, the possiblity does exsist, and the same effect could also become a reality if the whole economy were to completely crash could it not ? You can also look at it that way, as if money were all of a sudden worthless, so would be gold and silver. Same things would and most likely could become a reality. Are you ready for it to happen ?
