I have heard from a friend that Heirloom seeds are being pattented and taken off the market so that TPTB can take control of our food supply along with everything elese.

Manufacturing infertile genetically-engineered seeds, making farmers dependent on agricompanies for future seeds, to control world prices, contributing to the suicide of thousands of bankrupted farmers in India.

Is there any truth to this?

I doubt it. How can you patent a hundred year old seed variety?

I have read, in several places, that the big Ag companies are trying to get them regulated out of common availability and use. Patenting? The big AG can only patent varieties they develop, IIRC - franken-seeds. Other than that the big Ag, like Monsanto are removing heirloom varieties from their catalogs. Once they offered thousands of open pollinated varieties, now I think they offer maybe 500.

don't forget that big AG will also go after the little guys after the franken-plants cross pollinate with tried and true heirloom plants.

Unless you start growing everything in a sealed "bio-dome" you'll eventually get some cross pollination with that crap!

As long as my bio-dome doesnt come with Paulie Shore and Matthew Baldwin I just might try it...

Talk about a bass akwards attack on someone. I have quite a supply of heirloom seeds. When I am attacked by Montsanto, I will use knowledge I learned from them against them while flying the Jolly Roger. Viva V for Vendetta !!!

Well, everybody better get their act (and their seed supply) together NOW because if this is all true....we are truly and irrevocably DOOMED. Without heirloom, open-pollinate seeds, there is no tomorrow for us after the SHTF. You all know that or at least, I thought that was the situation. If I am mistaken, would someone please tell me in what way my thinking is out of kilter.

I am remiss in that I have not ordered any seeds yet....can't seem to break my apathy. If this news doesn't do it, nothing will! It's all too easy in a Canadian winter, even a fairly decent one like this has been, to just blob out in front of the TV or with a book. Excuses, excuses, eh!

Don't worry for me. I don't. I know how the story ends. Not only that but, it's a fact that no one lives forever on this earth. Freedom's just another name for nothing left to lose (that can be taken from you). Like Daniel knew, there are some things that cannot be taken from you.

What seeds from the "Box" stores will produce reuseable seeds?

What perennial vetatables will naturalize with little or no care?

ANYTHING THAT SAYS HYBRID ON IT YOU WANT TO STAY AWAY FROM. What you need must say heirloom. What I am not clear on is this; I am pretty sure all heirloom seed is open polinated, but is all open polinated seed heirloom, and thus, non hybrid?

It would help if you had the exact name of the snow peas variety (not the distributor) such as "Mammoth Melting Sugar" or "Sugar Ann" or "Dwarf White Sugar". The first 2 are heirloom, I am not so sure about the last. Point is we could check.

If I may, I would like to suggest perhaps supporting the Mom & Pop heirloom seed industry on Ebay. I bought through a very reliable, well rated source, 2 massive seed banks, each containing 85 or more varieties of seed. I went with a company in Oklahoma, in my growing region. The seed banks cost me around $40.00 each with free shipping.

    Survival Essentials

I am not shilling for these folks, just passing on a review of an EXCELLENT bargain. Just an FYI - I purchased wheat seeds separately, to augment my seed banks. I chose a NON-GMO heirloom variety called Kamut, which is:

Another thing to think about is seed for livestock feed. Dent or Flint corn, wheat, oats, various hays, etc.
