New Email Virus Going Around

There is a new virus going around via email. It comes from someone you know and is titled "Private Message". When you click it, it sends you to a page that asks you to answer questions to win an ipod or some other goodie. By the time you click off the page, the virus is already inside your computer. It then, immediately, takes your email addresses and sends the same message to everyone on your email address list.

DELETE BEFORE CLICKING ON THE MESSAGE!

Hope this saves some folks some heartache and trouble. It got through all my Firefox filters and other anti-spam and anti-virus software.

Why would you open an email from anyone you don't already know in the first place ? I get as many as 5-6 a day where they get my email address from my web pages. I don't open them. I can spot the phonies from the real emails at first glance. By the way, if you didn't enter a contest, how on earth can you expect to win anything ? It is simply a new twist on an old scam. As I often tell my son, "I may be an idiot, but I am not a total idiot." If you had read my warning, you would have seen that the virus sends the infected file from personal addressbooks using the person's email name and server. The email I got was from my brother-in-law's email account, sent as far as I could tell by him. He is the type of person who would send an email titled Private Message. All it took was opening the email to read to start the infection on my computer. The way I found out it was an infection was by getting one email bounced back as well as having my own email address in my addressbook which got me a copy again.

Yup, many of the successful scams have already compromised the contact lists of your friends and family. Makes for justification to ignore them [clp]
