OK, I'm gonna 'fess up. Since 10 PM last night, I've been on a Hostess brand bakery goods quest! We live in a small town, so I figured I'd be totally out of luck, but today I managed to score. Got lots of the chocolate cake goodies (Ho-Ho's, Cupcakes, Zingers, etc), but thought I was way behind the curve on Twinkies. Then, when I went to pick up my DS from one of his buddies' place, I managed to find a whopping 5 packages of 2 Twinkies/pkg! WOOHOO!!! Then, after picking up son, we hit 3 or 4 more places, but no more Twinkies.

He had a major big laugh at good ol' dad running around trying to find the Hostess goodies, especially when I told him I didn't even like Twinkies that much! LOLOL. Then, when he found out his favorite chocolate cupcakes were not going to be made anymore, it was "Hey, dad, let's hit just one more store!" ROFL.

Anywho, I was wondering how many others here did the same thing or something similar?

BTW, Twinkies are going on da 'bay for $70-75/box of 10, Ho-Ho's are $6 and up/pkg of 3; Cupcakes $7 and up/2 pk; Zingers $7.50 and up/pk of 3; and on and on. I figure in about 3 hours, I've made about 5X what I paid for these stupid bakery products! And it's only been what, 2 days?? Give it a week, a month. YIKES!

This is one tiny company, in one tiny niche market after only 2 days. I think this is a big fat warning sign for what's to come when main food groups become scarce/hard to find due to whatever reason.

    Scary!

Well, if one were to count on packaged food industry / long haul trucking / super center grocery stores. Then yep, it's scary for them. Especially if when the last of the tempting treats causes a riot or murder to occur .. Bwhahahahahaha the Mayans were right. It is the end of the world.

Actually, I've got a pretty low opinion of the sheeple right now. We will probably here about some 650 pound dude couldn't deal with the end of twinkies so he took all his food stamps, bought every last twinkie in sight. Went home and ate every last one, washed it down with 2 liters of Mogen-David, popped the rest of his oxycotin, chain smoked his basic menthol 100s and died.

Think and act local and one will sleep better at night. If i want a sweet, my sweetie will make me a cake or a pie. but never a sammich.

Twinkies and their kin are taking a vacation. They will be back soon made by non union bakers.

They will sell off the name and recipe to different competitors who will then market them under a new makes name. I dont think one group will buy it all. Some times the unions have to realize the boss is telling the truth.

It would be a marketing coup, if the scarcity/closing story was just to stir up business. $70+ dollars for a couple of Twinkies on Ebay? Shelves bare at nearly every store? Hmmmm....

I can't eat anything with hydrogenated oils in them. Too bad because I wouldn't mind a twinkie...

Yep. Saw a news story that speculated about Mexican bakery, Bimbo possibly buying their recipes. If so, it's just a matter of time before we get Twinkies, etc. as imports to the USA.

I don't care about the loss of twinkies. I do however still mourn the loss of McDonald's Apple pies being deep fried in lard. Damn those were freaking awesome, now they bake them. Oh the humanity. How very tragic.

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

With any luck, when the company is bought by Bimbo, they'll do it right again and use the original recipe. Sorta like Mexican Coca Cola still has actual sugar in it and is bottled in glass and tastes a hundred times better.

I personally don't care about Hostess - I avoid their products as the heart-stoppers they are. Come on..... A tubular sugar cake filled with gooey white sugar filling - cannot be that hard to make at home. And the guys who opine that someone else will buy the rights and make them.... spot on! Where there is a demand, someone will fill it. Just a shame good Ameican jobs are lost to the stupid greedy unions...... more jobs to be out-sourced.

not just the greedy unions. Just plain greed by those IN the unions that didn't see the writing on the wall and tell their union bosses to step back from the precipice.

I still remember the national commotion when Coca-Cola stopped making regular Cokes and introduced New Coke back in the eighties. People were sending letters to the company as well as their local newspaper letters-to-the-editor in protest. Some people say the apparent mistaken corporate decision was a master marketing move because a few weeks, or months later they brought back regular Coke under the new label of Classic Coke. Sales surpassed all their projections so much to the point that they eventually killed the New Coke production.
