Last night, I was cooking a little dinner and decided to cook some okra along with it as a side dish. We have several cans of Trappey's brand canned okra, expiration date 6/12/12, so I grabbed one, opened it and started heating it up with some dehydrated tomatoes. As it warmed, it started smelling rather odd. Very "acidy" and off. I tasted a little bit and it tasted worse than it smelled. Yeah, I know, some of you think that even fresh okra smells and tastes bad, but I like it bunches. :) I tossed out the first batch, opened another can and started heating it without the tomatoes. Same sour smell and bad taste. Tossed it out and will dispose of the rest of the expired cans tonight. Drat!

Wow, I have never seen a can of anything go bad that soon after the exp date. I eat stuff that is years past date and other than the texture being off on occasion, it have never had an issue.

I guess you know what brand to avoid now.

Sounds like time for a trip to the range with exploding targets. Enjoy. I'm sure that seeing it go all over the range will beat eating that liquified snot.

I just had a can of Campbells for lunch that expired on 2/12. Glad I didn't have this problem........

I wonder if it was the the expiration or just a bad batch that would've been bad anyway.

Just ate some pork and beans which had a date of 2011, good stuff. =)

Good to know about the okra. I don't like that stuff anyway. Now, spaghetti sauce...? Got a few jars outta date. Might try some.

Just ate some carrots with an outdate of 08.. dang they were good. But I have had some Del Monte tomaoes swell up even before the out date. Just keepum rotated and if the lids are even the least bit popped up, throw um out!!!

Good advice, botulism is way worse than going hungry.

Speaking from experience, it only takes one bad decision to get VERY careful about smell when cooking...

It sounds lie bad batch to me. It should be edible and fine well past the expiration date. I try to always smell and gently taste test before cooking with expired cans.

Lol, I remember one time I grabbed a carton of milk out of the fridge and started chugging, after a few chugs I noticed it tasted like crap, literally, and was chunky. Now I can open a brand new container of milk and I smell it before drinking.

I had opened up cans of tuna and sardines that were ten and twelve years old. They were fine for eating, cept a little bit on the mush side. I fed the sardines to the cats. Then i had pasta from y2k sealed in plastic buckets still in the original boxes. They were ten and foreteen yrs old. They were fine. I ate them and gave some to the dogs. Then i got new. I never save tomatoes cuz they don't last long. I had to throw out a few cans of it.
