    If they manage to take me out, and they will, the word that I'm going to be bagged will be on the air just before it happens. That sort of word MUST be spread, and not stifled. Bagged is how I'll leave, no other way. Bugging out is no longer an option for me. I'll consider it a successful defense if I can take two with me. (One is none, two is one.)

    ok so you guys made your point on how you role...
    so this is the situation i was in ... post Katrina ... still a ghost town but we had passes for work ... some of my friends sayed in town and didnt "bug out" directly after the storm officials came by his house ... should he have started a gun fight right away ...or what would you have done ...

    What i dont understand is how yall are going to decide who you are going to shoot and when and why ...

    If you are Known, then "Welcome to our Fire" once you make your presents Known, on your way in, otherwise you are considered UnKnown.....
    If you are UnKnown, and coming here to "TAKE or HARM" We will persuade you, forcibly if need be, that you need to go elsewhere....
    If you are UnKnown, and just poking around, You will assumed to be coming to "TAKE or HARM" until you convince Us otherwise.....
    These are the ONLY categories, that define our response....

    I would not say we in general roll one way or the other, it is more whatever the situation dictates. You can not have a hard set of rules and survive- you have to flexible and understand your capabilities, what you can bring to the situation in experience and luck. Never underestimate luck in the time of need- just my opinion. ;)

    For me it is all about the feel of the situation and how things develop in regards to when you shoot under some form of duress. The "why" is a split second gut check and if you are right, you save your ass, if you are wrong.... well you work thru that hopefully. Many a good man struggles with things that happen in combat, some good- some bad (PTSD and so on). Some walk away and are not affected and others struggle to work thru it. When you are in that position to determine when to shoot, before you really think about it, it has happened one way or another.. You shot because you felt it was not right (the situation) or you held off till you find more information out. Neither one is necessarily wrong when you are in a survival mode.

    I for one would not go into a gun fight during a hurricane relief effort, that does not hit my threshold for what we are talking about after SHTF. I am thinking more along the lines of collapse of service, economy, government and so on.

    True story. Maximize situational awareness and develop the situation to the extent possible. The escalation of force TTPs we used in Iraq work well to help you figure out who is there for no other purpose than to kill, or who will back down. Our brigade commander at the time had a term for our TTPs: flexecution.

    As for natural disasters where loss of order is only temporary and regionally, I would do everything in my power to avoid shooting someone, because within our legal system, it is akin to having only one bullet in a gunfight, in that you can use it to save your life, but after that, you're toast. Your entire life will be subject to review by the legal system and your chances of leading a normal life after that are about 50/50. They could end up deeming you in the wrong and take your 2A rights away for life, or they could find you guilty and lock you away.

    In many areas, shooting in defense of property is legal. I'd be inclined to use that sparingly. Life, on the other hand, I'll spend the bullets needed for that defense, mine or others nearby. Gimme 12 rather than 6, every time.

    That depends somewhat on the life in question for me...if you are being dragged from your Prius with your Obama sticker on the back and beaten by a street gang...I'd have to think about it.

    Though I would have that moment of hesitation as well- lord knows there are day's that I wish that on Obummer lovers. I would be compelled to defend the weak (sheep) and be the sheepdog. For if I failed to act (when I can and it is appropriate with my safety and that of the family/team in consideration) it would only be a matter of time that all of the sheep would be wiped out, and the wolves would set their sites on me next. Take the fight to them on your terms in your playground and you may earn an ally for the common defense. As @grit said, "Gimme 12 rather than 6, every time".

    Not going to disagree with you on the what ifs....

    I usually do not participate in the Fantasy Football what if's scenarios around here. So, I stay out of them and try my best to not thread crap on them.

    but some of the replies can be entertaining at times.

    Though I agree it is a just "what if", I believe it is a valuable discussion to think out how you would prepare for such a situation. If you plan to loose power or other services, then why not plan on how you would do a hasty retreat in this scenario. Some people have thought this thru to some degree and their input may point others down a particular direction in the prep's they may have not addressed, such as local comm's, rally points, ECT. Just a thought... not being provocative.

    and I was not trying to kick anybody in the teeth or discourage anybody from sharing their ideas....

    Perhaps it came across that way, I do apologize if it did.

    Some of the replies I have read over the years here are thought provoking and some have made me crack up with disbelief.

    I just personally have not participated in many of the what if threads, that's all. That does not mean I have not learned anything from any of them, some people just go too far out there for me.

    My children know the "What if" game all too well. Before they started driving I would point out a potential hazard and ask them, "What would you do, if that car ran that stop sign." or whatever the situation. They had to come up with a plausible response and we would talk about it. I do that with myself all the time. It's a great way to learn without actually experiencing the situation. Of course the answers must be plausible. To this day, my children talk about the "What if."

    We have been using this on our grandchildren now to try and get them to understand what they need to do under various scenario's. All three are under 10 and we discuss things such as what to do when separated from the folks at say the store, what to do if approached by a stranger, ECT. The basics are good- phone number and address, but we are trying to expand their thought process on how to handle themselves on their own, use the evaluation of their situation, and have a simple course of action to follow.

    I wouldn't hesitate to watch them get their just desserts from a safe distance! No way will I put myself or my future in jeapordy to assist a willful idiot, and probable hostile witness in avoiding the realization of their life long socialist dreams, AKA sTewing in their own juices.

    For an area like a post katrina thing I like one of the ideas mentioned around that time, may well work with some study/intel of other evacuations as well. Clearing an area is a big job and THEY have to communicate what has and hasn't been done to each other. In post katrina that meant standard fema markings in spray paint on structures to show if searched and what found. If you don't give indications you are there and it is marked as cleared AND dangerous possibly even a body count to convey biological hazard and smell along with structurally unsafe then THEY have no reason our desire to go there and you just let them go on past.

    If I do go away while they pass then grab BOB, guns/ammo, water and other ryan that if only leaving for a few days at most then hide food and reloading stuff.
