yard-_the_Construction_of_Motor_Fishing_Vessels%2C_Rye%2C_Sussex%2C_England%2C_UK%2C_1944_D22783. An adze (/ˈædz/; alternative spelling: adz) is an ancient type of edge tool[1] dating back to the stone age. Adzes are used for smoothing or carvingwood in hand woodworking, similar to an axe but with the head mounted perpendicular to the handle. Two basic forms of an adze are the hand adze, a short handled tool swung with one hand, and a foot adz, a long handled tool capable of powerful swings using both hands - the cutting edge usually striking at foot or shin level. The blade of an adze is set at right angles to the tool's shaft (like a hoe or plane), unlike the blade of an axe which is set in line with the shaft. A very similar (but blunt) tool used for digging in hard ground is called a mattock.

I collect antique wood working tools, so i have all the planes, block planes, adjustable radius planes, plow block planes and draw knives I will ever need. I have brace and bits enough to be very boring, and enough brass and wood bubble levels to do it level headed. I have hand saws from coping, to two man timber saws.

I have drawers full of wrenches, and sockets. ratchets, extensions and speed wrenches, and breaker-bars.

I have electric saws from cut-off wheels, reciprocating, circular, and table, with router, planer, grinder, belt and pad, and profile sanders, Biscuit -joiner, and drill presses.

i have cutting torches. and bending tools

hammers from ball peen to 16lb sledge, and a rail-road-rail anvil, vices, and shaping posts.(I have made Armour)

several block and tackle, fence stretchers, four come-alongs, and chainfalls. with straps, chains, and ropes.

felling tools (axes, wedges, high limbs cutters, loppers, brush-hook, machetes, bow saws, three chainsaws, and spud-bars to act as earth anchors, and hand digging tools of all sorts.

I need a pump (mine was damaged by letting a friend use it.)
I need a welder (beyond the little buzz-box i have now)
I need air tools to go with my compressor. (palm nailer would be a good start.

Only two tools needed. Duct Tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.

Seriously though, great lists above. 10 Single Tools (not sets) I would want are.

    12" Channel Lock Adjustable Pliers
    12" Adjustable/Crescent Wrench
Klein or Channel Lock Lineman Pliers
    Klein 11 in 1 Screwdriver
    20oz Claw Hammer
    2lb shop hammer
    Lg.Come-along
    Farm jack
    4-way tire tool
    Shovel

Expand that list greatly if we are talking about tool sets.
    mechanics tools
    digging tools
    hoisting tools
    lifting tools
    welding and heat/cutting tools
    pneumatic tools and compressor
    beating tools
    cutting tools
    fencing tools
drill and driver sets (corded and cordless)

10 tools? .... only 10 tools .... you get the basics that are in your BOV tool box .... a 25 piece set of screwdrivers don't count as a "tool" .....

Add to or replace with a Cutter Mattock for...
    • chopping out roots
    • trenching through tough soils
Invaluable for removing stumps and cutting fox holes.

great lists, I would add a drawknife/spokeshave to the mix
    as for saws, chainsaw YES!!
but beyond that, I have a couple of old 2 man saws hanging in the garage for the day I hope never comes.
I am looking for a nice one man saw with handles to add to the collection

the 2 saws I bought were covered with a light layer of rust and slightly pitted, so I gave them a once over with a wire brush then soaked them in gear oil and hung em. people ask if I painted them black, and whikle they could use a fine tune, they are still reasonably sharp, one still needs a handle set...I look for a set whenever I can at flea markets and sales

You can still buy a "saw set" for the proper angle on the teeth and improve the cut. I would use fine steelwool and motor oil to remove the rust.

I have both saw types and a set of fine and medium hand saws. The hand saws were purchased as I first started to prep, back in the 70s. They are by Disston Saws and being from the 70s they are a high % of chromium. They have never rusted and are bright to this day. And yes a draw knife is used around here as well as an Adze.
