So, last fall the wife and I picked up a Katadyn Ceradyn water filter for our emergency supplies and to use at a future BOL. When we got it home we tested it out, making sure there were no leaks and it filtered properly. Per the instructions we let the system dry for a few days then packed it all back up (this filter stores in itself which makes it convenient when not in use). Today, I noticed out tap water (city water, not well water) tasted funny and left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided I was going to setup the Ceradyn and use that today as not even the Britta removed the offending taste. Low and behold, all 3 filters have black splotches of mold on them and there was about an 1/8" of water standing in the bottom of the container. So, are these filters ruined or can they be salvaged? I've cleaned the outside the best I could, but you can still see the mold spots. Suggestions? I'm not really looking forward to having to replace all 3 filters at $60.00 a pop (amazon price). Thanks in advance!
Wash with Regular Clorex Bleach and let soak for 24 hours. Use the unit and run several gallons through it. Drain and let dry in a sunny windy spot. They will last as long as you will.
Yeah, black mold is nasty. Did you try soaking them in warm bleach water and then allowing them to dry completely? I don't know if your filters have charcoal inside them, but if so, it might be baaaaad.
Thanks Broker, no there is no charcoal in them. I soaked the filters in bleach water, washed them off and I'm now running a couple of cycles of water through. Each cycle will be approximately 10L. I Thanks all.
so far so good. 1st 10L of water went through and no more black spots on the filters. Now running the second batch.
I use mine daily and wash and rinse it every 6 months or so, while filtering well water. To dry properly you need to remove the filters and clean the thumb screws and the washers. Air dry out side of the container.
