One word. Magnesium Flare. Ok, i guess that is 2 words. NV is not going to like that bright light.

Easy mark for a road flare, too. I think I'll stick with flir. Nothing can hide that gives off heat.

FLIR is a bit expensive. Not in my budget at this time. It's on the want list, but not the need list.

anyway @firekey I'd be careful what you are betting on. Sounds like you are holding Aces and Eights.

My NVDs can spot Vessel Running Lights at 15 miles.... Plenty of time to get the 1000Yd Weapon off the Wall, and out into the Bush...

so? you bet your life on MANY things that aint 99+% reliable. I guarantee you that there aint 3 million sets of laser target designators, nvd googles, or luminous inserts (working still) in the entire USA. So my odds are quite correct, and you're wrong.

what good is a laser designator w/o a plane w/ a bomb? Unless you are working with the government.
Just remember, that all thing technological are flawed and it always has a weak point, just like everything else.

Um, no. There are many right answers, and most of the right ones are silent. Stealth is still your best bet for attack or defense. In the case of an EMP, you may be relying on five pounds of scrap metal and plastic. As a hunter, I know I could stalk most people, and they would never even know I was there. The only tool that you can truly trust is your mind. Stop worrying about gadgets, and simply learn to be observant.

Do you even know what a laser target designator is for? It is useless solo.

Well ask my son-in-law and he will tell you it does a helluva job on a retina.... he was shot in the eyeball with one and spent some time up at Madigan..... funny that was how I met him for the first time..... he was shocked when I walked in the ward first day he was back in country and said hello...

Any decent laser pointer will do that, and without pointing out where YOUR head is, or even exposing yourself to fire. And for that matter....he has two eyes. Even complete distruction of one eye would not have kept him from killing his attacker.

a laser designator might come in handy like flares when a heat seeking missile is fired at a plane. If you had a couple laser designators in outer OP's and the bad guys were know to be using them, you might be able to attract a laser guided weapon to something other than it's intended target. I know, lots of variables. lol

If they have that kind of hardware, I have only two choices. Fade away, or attack. Defense ain't an option.

Ah, I see. I was more seeing them as a tool used by military against another. I was thinking civ. vs. civ.

Nope, that is not how they work... Each Designator has, besides a Laser, and Modulation Coder Device, that has Settings, of which there are thousands, that modulate the Laser. This Code MUST be loaded into the weapon, BEFORE it is Released, from the Sending Entity. If the Code is NOT the same, the Munition does NOT Arm, or Guide, on the Laser. This is a Fail-Safe Weapons System, that REQUIRES Comms between the Designator and the Sender. ......

An inferred Seeker is a Fire and Forget System, where the Seeker set on the Munition, is locked on the Heat Source, BEFORE it is released, and then it follows the locked Source, until it either hits, or runs out of Fuel, where it falls with a deActivated Fuse.

Radar Guided Munitions are similar to the Laser Guided Systems. The Radar is modulated with specific encoded Modulations that must be In the reflected Energy from the Target. This allows an AWACS Plane to light up a Target, from hundreds of Miles away, and a Fighter that is a lot Closer, to Launch the Munition, without activating its own Radar, and giving away it's position, to the Target. The Target needs to be locked into the Radar Seeker Head, BEFORE the Weapon is released.
