This is something I found off another forum and thought to post it here. If this is valid avoiding detection becomes easy and affordable.

After watching the video it appears the trees do a fair amount of shielding the people fron the FLIR as well. As far as being caught out in the open, unless the crew knows exactly where to look and what to look for you'd have your very own cloak of invisibility ! [tongue]

    Very cool, and well documented.

FWIW, a like "blanket" is being fielded in a certain mountain region just northwest of India.

    Likewise.

I alsways carry a few mylar heat blankets, either in my pack and the Aid Kit. Cheap at most sports stores in the 3 pack.

    Spares!

Reminds me of a time a climber left on a warm day to climb 12,000 feet. I ended up splitting my gear and sharing so as to keep him moving to the top.

    Fools are all around us.

How does metallized mylar do against radar?

Looks like a bleeding forest fire.

Mylar is used as flack in strips, to be used with flares for aircraft.

They are cheap, very light weight, pack small, can be used as a back drop reflector for a small fire to keep you warm with less fuel, waterproof, used as a signal mirror, protects against too much sun, carry water, it just makes sense to carry a few.

Agree. The point was that they are not particularly useful for concealment.

Dumb question here but how often might radar be used to search for people on the ground ?
Seems to me the FLIR is the tool of choice for most local and state level agencies (State Police, F&G and DHS).

I was thinking lining a debris hut with a couple space blankets would get you a nice warm and hard to find hidey hole.

Radar directed at the ground would just reflect the ground. Radar is a bounced signal kinda like an echo.

Yes, that's true. However, short wavelength radar will show details that (say) aircraft radar does not need to function.

Okay, this is from personal experience about FLIR. Yes, thermal blankets will defeat your thermal signature, but while in Iraq, we lost countless insurgents from our Predator drones just because of the natural foliage.

The one thing you have now to deal with is the Reaper drones possessing the radar for their GBU JDAM bombs. The best thing to do to avoid FLIR is to try and keep from being out in the open, and if you need to traverse any open terrain, then drape your mummy sleeping bag over you.

Way back during my first active duty tour, in the mid 80's. If we were opfor against the new M1 Abrams, we would sneek up to them by low crawling with our issue sleeping bags draped over us. Worked like a charm.

Using mylar/blankets/poncho liners/ponchos to mask your FLIR signature was one of our BS subjects at the gathering. Experienced words said in cold weather they were practically useless after just a few seconds due to the temp. differential. As the weather warms the time lengthens.
