I saw this on another site. It was a list of 37 Unusual Items for Prep. I think some of the items are questionable but let's discuss.

37 Unusual Things for Preppers to Keep or Buy While It's Still Available - See more at: 37 Unusual Items for preppers

I am not going to copy the whole thing because I am not sure of copyright issues:

They say to buy fire extinguishers by the dozen. What is the shelf life on a fire extinguisher? I suppose we all have one or two in our homes but that is an expensive prep if you are buying the big red ones.

I think prepping and flying the Gadsden flag as a signal to other preppers is just lunacy. Personally I feel flying the flag during lawless times is basically painting a bulls-eye on your location.

There is a lot of things that will have to be deadadvertised in a lawless society, nice homes, livestock vehicles, generators and anything that would draw attention. Has anyone read the book or watched the movie "the road"

Copies of the original dec of ind and constitution is a must in any preps

Moto, there are many ways to combat a fire. Besides a fire extinguisher. Dirt, water, a wet blanket, no oxygen. Any gas that does not aide in combustion (nitrogen) should put out a fire.

I read and watched the movie. Unsure if I liked either. It was terribly depressing both times. BTW- to me a nice home would not be a target. Most nice homes have little food and all the gadgets but nothing practical.

So stocking up on fire extinguishers is not a good prep?

As part of my preps I started long ago, getting trained for thugs such as firefighting and emt, I think even if you have to volunteer to get free training that knowledge will be priceless, with a 1 gallon pump up sprayer I can put out a mile of grass fire, I also purchased a forestry drip torch for use of fighting fires with fire, you have to take out the fuel or the oxygen and the fire dies

They are a good front line defense, but how will you recharge them? I have more important uses for my money. I have about a dozen I can set my hands on in need, in mounted locations for easy access. That is all I need.

Moto, I agree, because once they are used their trash, one should learn to combat fires in a primitive manner and not be dependent on non reusable resources

    Here is my issue:

New preppers look for info. And they sometimes are led astray by lists that could be a waste of time and money. I am sure I have mentioned it but one of the survivalists that most know about has a green book. That green book says to go immediately to Costco or Sam's and charge a thousand dollars worth of food. Then get another cart and fill it with another large purchase. This person tells people to go charge supplies NOW! I have been slowly learning and gathering for years, I am grateful that I didn't go charge thousands of dollars worth of stuff because I would have had to pay off stuff that I couldn't afford at the time.

*It may not have been the green book that said charge it, I have been looking through my resource to get the quote.

In the eotwawki, their will be plenty of places to grab fire extinguishers if you know where to look, just about all commercial vehicles and equipment have them

Moto, What green book?;) lol. I never even heard of it. Guess I'm a terrible prepper.

My truck has two, and the locations on work trucks are clearly marked.

It has become a major money maker for lots and lots of people, used to you would have to drive a couple of hours to get training for ccw, but now theirs one on every block, the zombie ads even the ones posted by the CDC has fueled the mess, the gov is behind it all

I think that has more to do with a weak economy, and using any useful skill to make money. I have more than one hat myself.

I think when it comes time for scavangers to strike, they will hit "every" home, as even a couple cans of food or some fresh blankets are worthy for them to take. Best keep that defensive plan prepared, as no house will be immune to people poking around trying to survive.

if you have a few of these scattered around your house in your more fire prone areas it is a good thing. It would also be prudent to have one quickly accessible to your bedroom, in case you have to fight fire starting at your door in the middle of the night. Basic means of fire safety would also call for you to have at least a secondary means of escape from a second floor vs just using the stairway, which is also a defensive choke point in my particular situation.

Just as a side note, I would never throw out an expended fire extinguisher..... they could be used as a container for defensive use.... such as making perimeter IED's if you had the desire to do so. Just an opinion of course, not that you would ever do something like that pre-shtf.. [peep]

Or just fill them with dirt to deflect bullets. Cut them open for containers, or use them for counter weights or use them as floats. (just to name a few.)

Nice list of items- great post Moto.

Bungee cords are so versatile and something I would have plenty of. Back in the service days, I would use a few of them and a poncho and within a minute or so, have a hasty shelter from weather, wind and such. You could also use the same items and have a quick means of catching rain water... Our BOB/GHB's have this set up for just these type of purposes.
