Google maps- satellite is your friend.... it can show you things that are impossible to see by looking on the ground. In my GHB & BOB's I have plenty of screen shots... call it a step by step view..... that complements my normal maps. Are others using this tool for planning? :)

Dawg23 do or do not, there is no try

me, I am going to head out ASAP once i figure out what the heck is going on. I know that my parents arent that well into prepping, and they tolerate my "over-preparedness" the sooner i can get out and blend in, the faster i can make it home, and bunker-in.

Haul ass unless the weather is an issue. Nothing to be gained from hanging around work.

I'd be up the creek without a paddle. I live in Iowa but working in St. Charles, MO. Hopefully I'll get a job closer to home next year.
I'm equipped to stay with the car in a snowstorm But not get back home.

Not a driver.... but used them as a taxi an awful lot & fell out of a bunch of them as well ;)
I always enjoyed flight time, though there were some scary moments. Most all of the pilots I ever knew were the best!! Glad to hear you were one of them.

@GhettoPass Did you keep your Cert, after you got out, or had you had enough, and moved on to other Realms?

FAA License is good for life. Flight time/90 days and Medical is the piece of paper that has to be kept up.
I got my CFI and did flight instruction and tours until injuries from a crash convinced me to trade in poor flight pay for a career in engineering. I'll be building an airplane prior to retirement so my wife and I can visit our children easier. I've been an airplane pilot too, since 17.

In my GHB I have copies of the state forestry/fire maps which have all 365 water sources, all navigable trails and power line through ways, I have walked part of my route and checked out other areas with my vehicle.. I discovered that Google map/earth can be very fickle as logging and disking of some of your route may cause major issues... (logging blocked two crossing points in one of the swamps, and tilling took out one of the paths.. still navigable but hard going) make sure you verify your Google sat pictures before relying on them... I have a spot where I can get a Bike to ride the 15 miles I have to go to get home... I still want to get an older Motebecambe motor bike that used the pedal start as a back up...

I've been thinking about this problem since my first post on this thread. This Saturday I ordered a Baofeng uv-5r HT. I believe EMP event is not likely but I've been wrong so many times before why not gamble that I will be again.

I'm going to remove the antenna and wrap the radio and antenna in aluminum foil. I'm going to get a roll-up solar charging system and wrap it in aluminum foil too. Both of these will go into the trunk of my car with the rest of my survival gear.

Immediately after recognizing an EMP event has taken place I'll grab my gear and hike to the nearest airport and rent a small airplane. It is only 240 air miles to a grass strip 2 miles North of my house.

I am confident a Piper Warrior or Cessna 172 will still work since they use Magneto's. The pitot static system contain the only instruments I'll need. Transponders and comm radios will not be needed if I stay out of controlled airspace. I will use IFR (I Follow Roads) to navigate home.
