True or false????
EDIT 2 - I really am sick. It DOES say fan belt...I DID read it right. So, yes, pantyhose can be used as a temporary fan belt but I would not suggest trying to use it as a replacement serpentine belt. EDIT - For some reason I read that as fan belt...don't know how I got that from "Radiator Hose". @kellory is right, not gonna happen.
No way pantyhose could replace a broken radiator hose, but could act as a temporary clamp or pressure dressing on a split hose. You could also use it for a pressure dressing on your own wounds.
Sure, pantyhose can be used to replace a radiator hose, even a serpentine fan belt! Certainly not recommending this but you could stretch them over your head. Then when you go into the autoparts store to shop lift or steal a new belt or hose, the staff might not be able to identify you. You "used" them to replace the hose. Much like the story of how do you use a barometer to measure the height of a building. Phy Parable Hmmm... I wonder how many ways you could use a pair of pantyhose? Have fun. AT
I didn't think it was possible to use pantyhose to repair a radiator hose or fan belt but @Airtime proved you can.
In the late 60's my wife had a Corvair which regularly broke fan belts. She learned how to replace them and carried spares. Along with a spanner and torque wrench. Several time when she ran out of spares, she'd use old panty hose with runs to make an emergency fix. Once, in the presence of an astonished NJ State trooper, she went in the car, took off the one she was wearing, and fixed the car. Her three girl friends in the car laughed hysterically every time they told the story because she really aggravated because they were brand new. I wouldn't have believed it except I saw her do it once. So it's possible with the correct tools.
I don't doubt the belt useage, (i have, in fact used surgical tubing for that use.) but use as a pipe is not possible with a material as porous as nylons.
Pantyhouse makes a fine mesh useful for some types of epoxy to cover small gaps, like fiberglass mat material. You lay it on, smear the epoxy in the first layer, let cure, additional layers as needed. How do I know this? I repaired a crack in a water tank this way! Tank sits under at least 40 PSI constant pressure. No leaks, no dribbles, no problems.
Regarding the pantyhose- I still can't fathom that it would fix your fan belt because it stretches so much plus is slippery, but then I have never tried. Anyways- what I thought were interesting prepper uses is filtering water plus if you followed the link in the article it talked about using panty hose as a net or to catch bait. I do think a few pairs will be placed in the BOB. They take up little room, plus the article made mention that you could use them to hang food off the ground.
Moto, I have heard of them being used commercially on home catchment systems as a filter from the downspout as it enters the rain barrel. It strains pretty fine, and is both cheap, and very easy to replace.
Oh, one other use I have used them for. ...I had a problem with raccoons in the hunting cabin making a god awful mess. So I researched natural/legal deterrents for coons. Seems they can't stand old style mothballs, so a box of them, split between a pair of nylons (tied of as bags) and lofted into the actic space, has meant no more coons. You can also use dried fox pee. ( if you can find it).
