What's your favorite Multi-Tool?

This is coming from a mini discussion earlier on the shout box. Moto's idea actually;)

So what is your favorite, and why?
I like the the older Gerber multi tools myself. To me they are a bit more user friendly. Leatherman's are great tools, I just like being able to open my multi tool with a flick of the wrist. My wife carries the same one in her gear-just by coincidence, she had hers before we met. I have bought several of these at pawn shops and have sent them back to Gerber to have broken blades/screwdrivers replaced with no problem. Gerber used to make a model that was painted or some kind of coating, kind of redish in color. I have two of these and DO NOT care for the coating. Makes the tool a bit stiffer to use IMO.

Leatherman MUT It is setup to support field weapons maintenance along with the usual multi-tool functions.

    MUT - Leatherman Multi-Tools

The Leatherman MUT is the first multi-tool that functions as both a tactical and practical tool for military, LE, or civilian shooters. The MUT features multiple areas on the tool threaded for cleaning rods and brushes and all the screwdriver bits are sized for standard military and civilian sighting adjustment work. Also built into the design of the tool is the flexibility to replace the most commonly used parts on the spot, using a simple Torx #8, keeping down-time to a minimum. With all this, a MOLLE sheath and scope adjustment wrench included, the Leatherman MUT may very well be the most efficient and useful piece in your kit.

I carry the Leatherman Wave in my everyday bag. It isn't as multi functional as the Mut above but it really serves as a handy tool. I use it at work and with everyday needs. I was born and raised in a Leatherman family so I have never looked at or considered a different brand.

I carry the Gerber multi-tool 600 with tool kit of assorted hex drive bits of your choosing. You used to be able to custom order colors, and individual blades, now, you can order individual blade packages for each side, in either black or silver finishes. you can order individual blade replacements or send the tool back for repair. this Gerber tool has a lifetime warranty and I have already returned it twice. (they replace the first one because they upgraded the model, not because there was anything wrong with it to begin with).
gerberas are easy to open, and fit your hand better than leather Leatherman's do.
there are specialized versions available for archers or snowboarders, and heavy duty versions (diesel) but I do not know about a military version yet. check out their website for what's available.

    Leatherman MUT

I've carried Leatherman tools since around '92 when there was a single model -
As much as I dislike Tim Leatherman's politics, they're tough to beat. The Glock of the multitool world ;)
I've toured the manufacturing plant a few times over the years and gotten to watch people fabricate and assemble the multitude of items they offer these days.

I can't comment from MUT experience since I've only had one for ~16 hours but it's very impressive. Mine is the non-EOD model and has AR/M4 specific tools. I'd have to say that it's my new favorite multitool

Has anyone ever sharpened the blade on one of these or is it not worth it?

On your Leatherman? If so, sure you can. Just like any other knife blade.

I have had three LM's and one Gerber(issued to me for my tour in Iraq). Have heard good things regarding the LM Mutt. May splurge to get one.

I've not had to sharpen a leatherman but I would if it needed it. Since I always carry another knife on me (Hinderer XM-18), I use my dedicated knife and not the leatherman blades.

My favorite multi-tool is a shovel. I can dig a hole to hide in or to poop in, I can clear brush, bust firewood, cook on it, throw it at a charging bear, and beat a crawly snake to death with it, all of which I have done except throwing at a charging bear, but you never know...

He has an excellent point... a multi-tool is whatever you desire it to be.... a door knocker, a sledge, a heavy duty key ..... whatever you desire the tool to accomplish.

I was working on removing the Xmas lights from a tree tonight and had some high stuff to remove. I grabbed a weeding rod that is about 5-feet and was able to reach what I needed to get to.... after that I threw it at a point in the yard and it flew true as an arrow... a weapon in disguise.
Point being, anything can be a multi-tool... you just have to see it for what it can be vs what it is.

Victorinox Fieldmaster... everything I need handy for 99.99% of the things I would do with a multi-tool... ( and no corkscrew! ) added the pin to the secret hole in the handle ;) and it has two blades... keep the small one razor sharp and never use it.... if I gift it, lose it or break it... it's light, cheap and easy to replace... already gifted 2 out of my pocket ;) non threatening/ non tactical red plastic handles... even though I have a black and a camo Fieldmaster... but somehow those look a bit more sinister plus if I drop it in the dark they are harder to see....

Yeah I know... what happened to all the cool gear... guess I'm just getting old and like to carry light and multi use... this and my little aaa flashlight and figure I can handle just about anything ;)
