When you walk out that door for your morning/evening exercise, the walk to the bus stop.... or just the casual walk around the neighborhood, how have you prepared for the chance encounter of a bad guy? Have you taken any of the following to better prepare your chances: self defense courses of any kind; are you alone or take a partner; do you have a weapon such as a can of mace, a tazer or other means to defend yourself from those that wish to do you harm. Do you have a means of communication with family at home via a radio or cell phone.... is the battery fully charged? I have two women in my neighborhood that walk at 5 AM.... they keep a continual conversation going with someone on the other end.... maybe the husband of one of them.... smart in my book.

Here is a good lesson of a gal that had an encounter, that could have turned out really bad.... but she got lucky. The reading of this tells me she was alone, had a dog that was not intimidating or able to protect her, she barely was able to fight off the attacker, shows little situation awareness as the guy came up to her and tried to pick her up physically, had a dead cell phone and then followed the guy leaving an open door to another attempt of attack. It turned out well.... but it is a reminder to be vigilant and ready when you are out an about........

‘He didn’t expect me to fight back:’ Everett woman fends off attacker | Q13 FOX News

There are bad people out there, everywhere, in all communities. We hear of these stories every day...
Either they will try to get you while you are out doing your daily adventures be it work or play....
or they kick in your door.... be prepared.

Great thread YD .. it really makes you think ...
I believe this is from the Everette Washington area.. if not its all the same ...
Another reason I believe it is a good idea to have some sort of protection, is attacks of wild animals to people out walking and jogging or just going about life....

Not having a charged cell phone makes me wanna choke someone....
Also have a weapon on you and having a weapon ready to use are two completely different things...
A can of mace or a tazer or a gun aint gonna do you any good in the bottom of your purse...

All I am saying is always be ready....
There is always room for improvement ..
After all that's what this site is all about any way right ..

Alpha Dog survival of the breed

Hey Y/D got one for you, it was a couple years back had a lady (very pretty) who walked every morning around 5am and every evening around 8pm.
Well her walking partner was a 75lb Pit bull that's how I know the lady I was the one who had given her the Pit when he was a puppy. Well one morning she was walking through a wooded area when a man grabbed her needless to say he found out real quick how protective Pit bulls are. We get there and arrest the guy several hundred stitches later I finally got to interview the guy. The guy said he had spoke to the lady almost every day for 6 months he would even pet and play with the dog as the talked so he thought the dog would just stand down or run off..lol...What a dumb a$$.
But it does make you think about what people will do to set up an attack and if it hadn't been a protective breed of dog how things could have went. I let no one out side of my circle ever pet or play with my dogs.

Great example and a lesson for all, Alpha thank you!!
This is why they call them predators..... they look at there victims as prey, just as a wolf looks at a [sheep]
You just never know when you are being watched by someone wanting to hurt you or to take what you have.... readiness is a daily thing... be prepared!!

I keep trying to tell my wife she needs to get on board with shooting and that we need to find her a firearm she is comfortable with. Problem being, she isn't comfortable with a kitchen knife, much less a firearm. I've offered to take her to the range several times and she has declined. I wish she had a lady friend that was a shooter who would get her involved, but it seems that here, they are few and far between.

Situational awareness and the knowledge that anyone can become a victim at any given time is key. Good thread YD!!

A lot of lessons here. The first lady was just plain lucky. The 2nd example at least had her head on right. I'm not a fan of pits, but hers did his "job" well-Good Dog! I'll admit there are times when I leave w/o a carry firearm, not very often but it does happen. I can say that my wife NEVER goes anywhere without her pistol. During working hours it is secured in her office.

@Dunerunner I would suggest that you NOT get involved in teaching your Spouse, in firearms. I would just ask her if she would go to an NRA Class for Women... Or one designed to introducing Women to the Shooting Sports, and taught by a professional Instructor. Mixing Relationships, and FireArms Training, with a less than enthusiastic, Spouse is a recipe for DISASTER, IN BOTH areas.

^^^^THIS! My wife and I have a great relationship and I have been an instructor of other things but the problem with teaching a spouse, really anything, is that like it or not you bring all those years of relationship, non-verbal communication, inside jokes and in a lot of cases baggage to the table. No matter what you do or how well you teach there will be miscommunications and hurt feelings because you thought she understood something or things got misinterpreted.

I tried, semi-successfully to work with my wife at the range to get her acclimated to my .45, a 9mm and even a range .22. It went OK but all the things I mentioned above came into play and it wasn't nearly as successful or satisfying for either of us as the experience could have been with an external instructor/facilitator.

And no matter how good your relationship, how expert you are on the subject or your success in teaching others, a spouse will always listen more attentively to an "outside" expert. It used to make me slightly crazy many years ago before I learned the lesson and when my wife was learning handgun use and safety. I could make a point 3 times and she would finally get it when a friend took over....a friend that I HAD TRAINED.

Up until now I detested pit bulls. I taught all my daughters to shoot and took them hunting. Every girl should a least know how yo use guns. The great equalizer.

Everyone should know how to use a firearm, as well as hand to hand techniques for self defense. If you have children that are starting to get out and about on their own.... they need lessons on how to react to circumstances, how to disengage from a situation, and communicate with you at all times, amongst so many lessons a parent has to pass on to create a good citizen.

I see too many kids now days that just do not understand personal safety... they only want to be popular and therefore leave them subject to all sorts of predators.... on-line and in their neighborhood. Maybe just another indicator of the breakup of family units across the country, and the lack of strong parenting that a team can provide vs a working single parent.....

I was lucky, my FIL taught my DW. Dead shot with both rifle & pistol. It is hard to get her out to the range, she always push for me to take the (now adult) kids to the range.

I've seen the old saw - a family that eats dinner together, stays together.

My take - the family that goes to the range together - nobody f***s with them... And it it's great fun.

Thanks for the "other teacher" advice. Wife is reluctant to shoot with me. Have taught several target and point shooting but she just has never grasped the techniques or determination to go armed.

My wife has had some martial arts training. But the big thing is I taught her to go out with gear. She hates carrying anything extra, but now always have at least a basic kit load out. Wife and kids all wear road ID bracelets and I get her set up with a whistle on it. Now she always has it.

But situational awareness is key. Was at a supermarket with my wife one night and as we are walking in from the car, I see a shady person and immediately and discreetly reposition my wife so that I am now between her and that person. Sure enough, the person approached us, but nothing came of it. On the way out, the person was still there. Wife repositioned herself this time.

I tried to get my wife to work with me in my business. That lasted a week or two. It took longer for me to get her to do something for me than it did to do it myself. Because at work, I am the boss. Do it my way. After you have done it my way to know what needs to be done and how, THEN suggest a better way. Not right off the bat, because you don't even know what you're doing yet. I couldn't really do the Art of War discipline tactic, because who would I behead to make my point?!? So I just do my thing with work and do not involve her. That is probably why our marriage is sixteen years and counting.

Other things she can do it her way. I may suggest or show, but I leave it to her. She comes around at her own pace. So long story short, I agree with not trying to teach your wife too much or get her to do too much before she is ready. Just pick your battles. Sometimes, just an. "Oh SH!T, do you believe what that person did?" And the ensuing conversation can be both illuminating and persuasive in making your point. But it is more strongly made when she comes to the conclusion herself.

The wife and I work pretty well together on most things. I have given her "pointers" on her shooting skills and she takes to them well. I have known "The Nurse" a lot longer than we've been together-that helps I think. I helped her in years past, before we dated/married and she listened-now that we share rings, that's not always the case..:D My kid brother and I both were into martial arts when we were young-our father insisted on it. As I got older I moved into other areas of interest. My brother went on to make it a huge part of his life, both personally and professionally. All of my daughters were sent to train with their uncle and brush up on every visit back to the PNW. They learned much more much faster than they could've from me...

My wife is the nerve center of the neighborhood. She knows what is happening, who is doing what, and who is up to no good. She has phone numbers for everyone, and she is observant and watchful.
However....she could not fight her way out of a paper bag, nor does she know when to shut up and watch (bad move). She would not notice a personally threatening situation, and has started more than one fight by being outspoken. She just had an argument with me, last night about the effectiveness of "gun free zone" signs, she actually said that "a guy with a gun would rob somewhere else because he was not allowed to bring his gun inside" [facepalm] and called me ignorant for stressing that all the signs do is disarm law abiding citizens, and do NOTHING to deter crime. Shooting people, and robbing stores is already illegal, so why would a criminal care about obeying a sign? She told me to prove that no criminal ever, went somewhere else, because of that sign. (Sometimes, I think that woman is not right in the head! But then, she did vote obummer)
