Let's talk can openers and the importance of having some of them within your assorted supplies. I was recently reorganizing and rotating food items in several of my B.O. boxes, that have supplies preloaded for a truck B.O. I laughed at how many can openers I had scattered throughout the various boxes (at least one or two in each box and bag). I have everything from the P-38/51's to the standard openers that most folks have in their homes. I have noticed many times when folks talk about their BOB's, that they never mention a way to open can's, bottles and such. How have you addressed this simple yet important tool to open all of them can's in the pantry? Do you have the ability to open that bottle of wine... some folks have lot's of it.... you need to be ready to use that corkscrew.

I have a few of those above. I also have one that you should get for your collection. My Uncle has carried one of these in his pocket since Vietnam. He gave me one, told me to carry it everyday. I still haven't perfected using it.

And if he had slit his hand either with the knife or with the lid when he peeled it back.... he would have been running for the first aid kit with a quickness.
Having the right tool in the first place is the point.... but improvised methods are good to know as well.

A pair of needle nose pliers takes care of all of that.

I recall that show Blackout show had a guy die from opening a can. He didn't have a manual one and slit his hand.

Yes, the old p-38 and newer p-51 can openers I have many of each the p-51 is a bit easier to use. Buy the stainless USA
versions not the cheap chinese knockoffs got a chinese version free with some order not stainless and flimsy threw it away.

Going to look for a P-51 in stainless. I bought a handful of the P-38 knock off's and they bend so badly, you need a good dozen in your kit just to get dinner going!!

Can openers ? We gots plenty.

I've had a P-51 for so long I forgot where / how I got it.

Had several P-38's saved from the day I ate C-rats and would much rather use the larger.

*thinking of ham slices* <--If you ever ate them you'd know. [tongue]

I've had a P-38 on my key chain for almost 35yrs. I lost my original one that was almost 20yrs old, but remembered that I had it's twin brother on my dog tags and it assumed the mission. Worst case scenario, I have one on my Victorinox Swisstool and my Victorinox Ranger that I carry as well.

good ol swiss army folder has a can opener, I have two identical ones. Barring that I've opened cans with my hunting knife.

As I understand it, most cans are lined with plastic, so I try to avoid buying canned food.

  20. Having the food available may be a problem but getting into a can of food is no big deal. The only question is do you want to open it all pretty or do you just want to open it.
