A good big dog will help with your bear alarm problem too....
    Suggest akita, shep or husky.

At this time, and in your area, there are NO Brown Bears.... Only Black Bears.... These are usually not hard to live with in the same neighborhood. The Black Bear is usually not an issue for human safety, in rural areas like where your Cabin is, and it is early for them to be awake. It has been an unusually warm, and mild winter, on the west Coast, so they may be out early. If they are, they will be unusually hungry, a s there isn't much in the way of eatables for them growing yet. The ones to watch out for are the very Old Males, or the young Males that just left Momma Bear this Spring. These young Males haven't perfected their hunting and foraging techniques as of yet, so they tend to be more aggressive than your average Black Bear. A good Dog can be handy, in securing your place from them.

I am pretty sure it is elk scat. She has elk. I think she posted pictures of elk. Elk do make piles.

This convo is cracking me up. There were other piles with no clustered pellets. They were more like splats. They reminded me of cow pies. Could be a sick elk perhaps? Now I wish I took more pics, lol! And yes it has been very warm. When I was at the cabin sat it was at least 70 degrees. I was in a tank and too hot with my long jeans and boots on. I will get more poop pics next weekend. Two weeks from now I'll be having my first overnight there so I'd like to get a better idea of what animals are around lmao.

The elk bashed a hole in my cabin wall so keeping them away is probably going to be a priority, too lol.

I'm out of it then, We have no elk or grizzlies down here, A few Black honey bears, But I just kick them off the trail.

Everything else pretty much takes a dump in the water.

Yes, sloth, a bear bag. It is what back packers do, when they need to keep what they have.

Stop by your local BarberShop and see if you can score some Cut Hair.... Then spread it around the cabin perimeter..... Most undulates will steer clear of that stuff when they smell it....

No, sloth, I speak from years of backpacking. Now, reread what I said. At no time, did I say raise it like a flag directly over your head, now did I? I did not give a location, at all, other than to hang it between two trees.

Really? Were you there when they put a hole in your cabin? That is something I have never heard of. I have elk all around and I have never heard of them bashing a hole in a house. From the looks of your house there doesn't seem to be anything that would entice them. Elk will come up on the low deck to graze on potted vegetables but won't touch the house. @Quigley_Sharps may want to chime in here because he has wilderness experience in the NW.

Here is a shot of an elk. Had I opened the window I could have pet its back. But he never touched the house, there was nothing of interest inside.

Yep. The cabin sat unused by the previous owner and for some reason the door was open. An elk went inside and must have felt trapped or something. There were prints all over so the culprit was fairly obvious lol.

Bear droppings have different shapes and consistencies depending upon the food eaten. I would actually smell it. Sounds funny, I know. You can actually learn a lot from poop. Just my two cents. Oh, and check out this link, it will help... North American Bear Center - Scat / Droppings
