I just read the following dialog on Facebook and found it impossible to wander on down the road without adding my two cents. Read and weep

    Marianne XXXXX ‎Civil War
    18 hrs ·

This is awful. Please don't celebrate a war, ever, particularly one in which 600,000 American citizens lost their lives on American soil.

Kevin Piacente Marianne your an idiot. I hope u are not celebrating 4th of July because I hate to tell you your celebrating a war. Our war of independence against the British.

Marianne xxxx No, it's celebrating the signing of the declaration of independence on July 4, 1776. Yes, that sparked the war but, once again, we are not "celebrating" a war. That is a disgusting concept. Remember, commemorate, memorialize a war. Don't CELEBRATE it.

Marianne xxxxx Also, I'm not an idiot. The three degrees, including a doctorate, hanging on my office wall testify to that as do the hundreds of clients I represent each year.

Kevin Piacente Yes we are. We are celebrating the war that led to our independence. I'll celebrate for the fallen who laid down their lives so have/had the freedoms that are being ripped away from us today

Robin Ficarelli Actually it's celebrating the day that the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress. They signed in August of 1776 and the American Revolution started in April of 1775 with the Battle of Lexington and Concord. It's celebrating the day that we knew exactly what to say against tyrants to obtain our freedom and allow us to be the country we are today, which happened because of the war. I guess your doctorate didn't tell you that basic American History information.

Marianne xxxxx Well, if you guys want to celebrate death and destruction, go right ahead. The rest of the country will be celebrating the signing of the declaration of independence. Doesn't it seem quite the coincidence that our independence day is always on July 4, which was when the declaration of independence was signed? Just me?

    ___________________________________________
Robin Ficarelli It wasn't signed on July 4th....lol and how is this 4th of July celebration any different than what goes on in the rest of the country? Everyone has a BBQ or a fireworks show or goes to a carnival or parade.

Marianne xxxxx Ah, I had some of the details wrong, you're right. July 4, 1776 was the day the text was approved after many drafts. But we're still not celebrating the civil war. We're celebrating our freedom, our independence and our country's birth. My point was, and is, that the civil war has nothing to do with independence day and no one "celebrates" a war. And regarding my doctorate, that wasn't to suggest that I know everything - I know when to admit I'm wrong - it was to demonstrate that I'm not an idiot, as was asserted above. Warren Butchy Kolbenheyer Wow , ya know what's worse, your arguing about it! It's pretty clear in the original post it's a celebration of "the land of the free"! Last time I checked there weren't any degrees hanging on the walls of the grunts and soldiers on the front lines. Just because you have a wall of diplomas , it certainly doesn't prove anyone is smart, it proves they were intelligent enough to pass school.

Marianne xxxxx I guess I'm just not articulating what was upsetting to me and, frankly, it's not all that important. Enjoy the holiday, folks.

Dee Dickson That's part of the problem that exists today. Uninformed people view Independence Day as a "holiday."

As citizens of the United States of America, our Constitution affords us the luxury of protection from an overzealous government. It allows even the most uninformed to voice their opinion, practice the religion of their choice, enjoy the freedom of the press, lay their head to rest without fear that the government will house military forces in their homes without their consent nor can they be held for a crime without evidence and subsequent due process. That very Constitution and it's attendant Bill of Rights is the single abiding document that defines what separates our nation from those that value power over the protection of the individual.

A degree hanging on the wall means absolutely nothing except that someone enjoyed the freedom to attend a university without a government defining what could be studied.

I would suggest that the most learned Marianne xxxxx utilize just a small portion of her education to actually read our national documents, actually read the Constitution, the Bill of rights, the Federalist Papers.....and then begin studying the real history of the founding of America.

Ms xxxxx fails to understand that every success she has enjoyed in her life has come about because there were men and women who were willing to lay down their lives for the freedom she uses to be so disrespectful of their sacrifices.

In many countries around the world, she would be imprisoned at the very least and quite possibly put to death for the statements she has made today.

And when a police officer pulls you over on the way home tonight because he suspects you were involved in a crime, don't you dare use the "illegal search and seizure" card in your defense.

Using words to try and explain something so simple to idiots is no way to handle this situation.
I suggest using something in-line with their cognitive abilities, instead. Pictures say a thousand words...

Step 1: Display a Union Jack. I like to make one every year just for this very purpose.
    DSC00062.JPG
Step 2: Highlight the importance of why you are doing this.

Step 3: Demonstrate your allegiance and resolve.

An addendum to the FB dialog is that she came back and said she was offended by the assumptions I had made about her. She declared that she was a lawyer and as such, fully aware of the protections afforded by our Constitution and furthermore, since she had grandfathers who had fought in WWII, she honored those who fought for freedom.

I found her misinformation about the history of our country appalling, particularly if she is indeed a lawyer. My only response was that rather than being offended by my assumptions, she should be ashamed by her own comments. End of my participation in a dialog with this person.

Isn't it funny how "my grandpa" is the new ticket out of a discussion-esp when one is losing? I've run into this myself. "My Grandpa went here...." SO THE @#$! what?! That, and watching Saving Private Ryan gives you an E Ticket ride to spout mindless drivel?? Naynay says I. We are supposed to say,"Oh chit, Lordamighty thank him for his service"and give the young skull 'o mush a free pass.
DO NOT get me wrong, those M-E-N (and Women) that won WWII were cut from the same cloth that our founding father's generation were IMHO. BUT is it fair for these Know nothings to hang on to the coat tails of their grandfather's/great grandfathers for arguments sake?
Sorry, but it's a sore spot with me.

Dont Just another old gray Jarhead Monkey

One side of my family came here on board a prison ship. The other came as an indentured servant.. The first served as a captain of a ship during that great struggle for freedom and the other served in the continental army. Members of my family have served in every war this country has been involved in. I did nothing during the two enlistments in the Marines I served. I have not, nor, will I ever dishonor their memory. And I will not tolerate anyone dishonoring them either. @Tully Mars, @RightHand and @Brokor , Thank you for the great post..

You served, which is more than most people can say... You are a veteran whether you served in war time or peace time. If you raised your right hand and swore to defend our freedom you still did your part , active, guard or reserves.

Yes Dont YOU did something. You raised your hand to an oath and in doing so you signed a blank check to freedom. An oath with no expiration. Keep your musket close, see to powder and ball. I feel the call to muster is closer than most think.

Much Respect @Dont !! Freedom isn't free and the three percent of Americans that serve in the military insure the freedoms of the rest of population. Thank you for your service....

Way to get on that 30 something RH, what did Brokor call her, a Twit. [winkthumb]
