So I was poking around and found this picture and it made me laugh at first, because I started on a stick-shift. It brought back memories of dad making me learn to start off on a gravel road, up hill, without spinning the tires or stalling out. How many out there have never learned to do this task... how many preppers can not operate a stick if that was all that was available to get them down the road....I bet there are some and that is a handicap.

Then I thought about other things that I could do, and more importantly it made me think.....
what can't I do, why and what am I doing about it.

For one, I have always wanted to learn to hand-load my own ammo but have had one excuse or another keeping me from learning/buying the equipment and starting. I think I need to make a change and commit to learning and to start doing it (I am not asking for pointers in this thread). :)

So I thought I would ask you the same question.....
what can't you do, why and what are you doing about it
    ?

My first was 3 on the tree, and taught my first wife (bless her soul) using the steep hill/gravel road method. She didn't like it, but she learned quickly! Learned to change a clutch shortly thereafter...
I have to admit, reloading is a skill that I haven't practiced in a few decades. Darn, it's been that long?
I can't blow glass, because I've never tried. I can't write my own programs in today's languages (BASIC, a lifetime ago.) Welding aluminum, well enough to trust. Stainless, too, come to think of it. I haven't piloted a small plane in a long time either...but I could probably still find my way around the cockpit enough to get myself into a jam...successful take-offs = successful landings and such
Never assayed gold, nor panned for it.
The one thing I really cannot do though, is to tolerate blatant stupidity. (not aimed at anyone or thing on this site, by the way) Ignorance is one thing - teaching can correct that - but out and out stupidity just irks me to no end. Don't know if I want to work on that or not...hmmmm.
Excellent topic. Let me ask my wife for my final answer lol

@techsar. That made me laugh so hard I snorted my tea!

@Yard Dart The issue for me is what are my priorities and where am I willing to put my time and my money.

My dad was a mechanic.... he would grab a lawn chair and a soda and walk me through a brake job or other repairs needed on my dirt bike or truck as a young teen. We start out learning.... I pray that I am learning till the day the big guy punches my ticket for the final ride home.....;)

Well then there is this. I started on small motor bikes and stick shift old beater cars. 3 speeds, 4 or 5 no problem. Drove semi tractor trailers over the road for almost 4 years. Company driver hauling Standard Oil products. 10 speed straight non sleeper cabs and 13 speed cab over GMC Astros. It's been 42 years since I have been behind the wheel in a semi. It wasn't until I sat here reading this thread and thought about it that I realized I have forgot the shift pattern and sequence with the 13 speed. Who would have thunk it? I put one hell of a lot more miles on the road in those 13 speed Astros than I did on the local runs with those non sleeper 10 speeds. [dunno]

I have been working on my skill set and know many things but the main thing I need to work on is toughing the F**k up. I do not mean physically , I am too much of a Pollyanna and see the world looking thru rose colored glasses. I work a physically challenging job, have no problem working in the heat or the cold. I can and have worked hurt and love the challenge of working in less than ideal conditions. For me it is the mental part that worries me. If or when things go upside down will I be able to handle the emotional parts of it. Will I get angry too quickly or not get angry quick enough. Can I pull the trigger when I have to, metaphorically speaking. It is a constant worry of mine.

There have been many before us that wondered about the same thing....

You cannot know how you will react when the unexpected jumps up. All you can do is prepare as best you can, including imagining scenarios, and practicing the basics. Don't ask how I know this because I can't relate it, but it was the practice (mine and others) that saved our asses back in the day. Worry is the enemy, there might be time for that later.

    @ghrit. Well said

Someone I respect very much says most people will not be prepared for violence and there is nothing to be ashamed in that. If you have never experienced brutality you won't be ready for it.

I don't know that I am ready for the level of violence that may happen if SHTF ... I do know I have a line in the sand about what I will or will not tolerate when others invade my space. My hope is that I can react quickly enough.

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

The only stick I've ever had was a 6 speed 350Z. Whenever I had to stop on an incline I'd hold my breath when the light turned green, especially if someone pulled right up on my ass behind me at the light. Wait, no, I did have a 3 on the tree POS GMC farm truck. I drove it everywhere in first gear because the driver's side door wouldn't latch. I was driving with one hand on the wheel, the other holding the door shut.

I can't hammer nails to save my ass. I can hammer my thumb just fine, along with any other finger within 2 inches of the nail. This is something I've had a lot of practice at but if anything I've gotten worse over the years. This is why I use screws to build everything. And bailing wire.

I can't fry chicken. It's either beautiful on the outside, raw inside, or else perfect inside and totally burnt on the out. Anyone who says that is not a survival skill is not from the South.

I can't carry on a conversation with small-talk. Lots of people are great at it, but I am terrible. I am so accustomed to framing a thought and delivering it concisely to reach a conclusion, and making the effort worthwhile, that I often find myself in situations of awkward silence with nothing to say because the other folks aren't interested in intelligent discourse.

Sometimes, I can chill out and relax and just shoot the breeze, but a beer or two helps. :)

Taught all the kids to drive on this private road.. Backing up, in the winter, for a mile or more. Up hill and down. How to properly use a sledge hammer. Change a tire or a starter. Can up the garden and exceptably weld up a broken snow plow. Yet, I can not build a small shed! I keep working at it. Some time I will be able to do it. The wife tells me to just hire someone..
