    Sigh.

    Guerrilla thoughts...

This is a weed that could easily be used as a biowarfare agent, in a worst-case all-out war scenario.

The sap from a few pounds could be used to coat punji sticks, arrowheads, and anything an invader might be likely to put his hands on--like cans of food "left" by refugees, Or door handles. Or the top strands of barbed wire fences at natural crossing points.

Or impulse souvenirs--like an abandoned pair of binoculars (shades of Vincent Price!)...

A .22 hollowpoint packed with dried sap could become a real terror weapon. And even more terrifying would be to inject it into shotgun shells...

A wounded enemy combatant requires at least four people to support him. Right up until the officers start executing the wounded to end the drain on manpower. But then of course, morale goes down the tubes and officers start getting fragged.

    Dark stuff.

Anyone that might be disturbed by the above should cover their eyes before reading it.

Stupid thought came to mind. With the way it causes blisters I wonder if it would work Post-SHTF for treatment of plantars warts.

never mind me, just wondering out loud.

Those are extremely dark thoughts @UncleMorgan. Certainly gives a new meaning to defensive plants. I do wonder about harvesting the sap and if it stays effective a X amount of time. We know from the article that it is dangerous when you come into contact but will it stay toxic long enough to fashion it to be used as a weapon. Like nettles. They itch when you rub up against them but after processing you can drink them in tea.

I find it interesting that you can buy seeds for this plant. HERACLEUM SOSNOVSKI SEEDS (Giant Hogweed)
In Washington State it is law that you have to get rid of hog weed. If you don't get rid of it the officials will and send you a bill. If you don't pay the bill they can lien you. I am always suspicious, if it is spotted on your land there is a small window of time in which you have to get rid of it before they can enter your land.

Sorry to get off the subject of using the plant as a weapon but found all above when I was searching for info on the longevity of the sap.

Just like ginsing, moto. Illegal to possess the seeds during certain months. You can buy them, but when harvesting, you must report it, wiegh it, replant it at the same site, not take all of it, and report the wet and dry wieght for sale. But I can't have the seeds in my possession during certain months.

IMO that which I wrote about gives the officials a free pass to come onto and check out your property. Sorry but my tinfoil has been wrapped to tightly lately. Now back on subject- sorry for side tracking @UncleMorgan

    Great Post @UncleMorgan

This Giant is in the same family as angelica which is used in essential oil therapy. Both give you photo sensitivity for up to 48 hours. Obviously 'Giant' is much more toxic.

I did some more reading on 'Giant' and apparently if you can get all the sap off your skin and keep your skin out of the sun for 48 hours you are less likely to get blisters.

In searching for plants as weapons I found an interesting page. I also found that the Native Americas used yellow lichen
The Vegetative State of your Roleplaying #19: Plants in Warfare: Death by Poison - RPGnet This has been tried & tested but still unsure about using hogweed as a weapon.

My mom almost had child services called on her over that stuff!
Me & my sisters used it to "sword fight" and ended up with what looked like battery acid burns all over hands & face.
Dr. obviously dident know about it and freaked out...

Luckily a friend of hers knew what it was but yeah.. nasty stuff. (also watch out for the dogs getting it from running through it. if they do, wash the area really well... it heals a lot faster that way then following the vet route of applying cream (but not washing the sap off first so it continues to break out)

great bump on a dangerous weed. Most think you can only get sick or die from a plant if you eat it.
