aluminium casting may be a useful skill to replace parts that are no longer available. It could be used for casting buttons for instance, or belt buckles, or any number of other household objects.

Fitchburg State College Industrial Arts Department used to cast aluminium back in the 1970's and used old power tool parts and cans etc to cast the ingots. One of the most alarming things I have ever witnessed was what happened when some students put some magnesium saw parts into the pot. There was about an 16 foot high ceiling and the flames marks and metal splash was on the ceiling. It was only a few pounds of metal and only a small part of that was magnesium, but turning off the gas had no effect on the fire and only the depth and thickness of the furnace wall and the shape of the crucible prevented some serious burns. It looks very similar to aluminium so be careful, if in doubt, take a few shavings or filings and try to set them a fire. It works like the fire starters if pure magnesium metal and various alloys will burn with lesser amounts of heat. I am no expert and would really like to have someone with more knowledge explain the precautions.

I made a pact with myself not to exclusive bell the conservative cats here at SM, but to also make contributions that may benefit my fellow monkeys that they might not otherwise see but for my whipping the Google search engine. I have no prejudice against firearms, or other weapons for that matter, and I have an interest in self sufficiency among other things......

It just occurred to me that 81mm mortar illume rounds had aluminium cast tailfins....I may have thought of another use to which aluminium casting might be put to.

I'd like to try casting a flywheel with imbedded rare earth magnets properly spaced at the edge. (It could be done, using a steel ring for placement, two smooth paver stones, a drilled hole for the axle, I think.)
End result could be spun by wind or water, but I would still need to find a lot of copper wire.

old TV and computer cathode ray tube screens usually have a lot of fine copper wire as a common component. Motor vehicle alternators might be another source.
