Gopherman Sometimes I Wish I Could Go Back to Sleep

To those of you who have read my posts, it is no secret that I am a" Huge Fan" of youtube!!
I am naturally an early riser, often waking up around 3:30 am.
After starting my coffee pot, I head straight for my computer and read the News first to see what has happened overnight, so as to determine if world events will affect me and my situation.
I then watch an average of 1-1 1/2 hours without fail, more on weekends, of instructional youtube videos, everything from Solar Power,Rocket Stoves, Canning, Gardening,Hydrogen production, Natural Building Tech. ect. ect......
Doing the math on this it works out to be almost 550 hours a year of Instructional Education!
Some of the Video's I watch are made by "Regular People", others by leaders in their respective fields, so some are more valuable learning tools than others, But I usually learn something from all of them, if nothing else I see that everyday people like me can build extraordinary projects from little or no real cost to speak of using off the shelf Tech. or scrapped junk.
I tend to lean more towards an hour and a half, but even if one were to wake up an hour earlier every day, that's still a lot of knowledge acquired over the course of a year.
I never went to College because I didn't want to take a lot of courses that had absolutely nothing to do with my subject of choice, however through youtube"ing I feel that I can acquire the specific knowledge I seek for free, and concentrate my efforts on whatever specifically interests me, on a very relaxed schedule.
I also found that there are many College Level Videos one can access as well, and did I mention IT"S FREE!
    Just Say"in!

I have used youtubes here to explain about how locks work, how to make your own (fill in the blank), and as proof of concept. It is a useful tool.

    Super post, Gopherman!
    You are the consummate home-schooler.

Don't worry about not having a college degree--they're all fluff and PC kissassity these days.

95% of the people that enroll in community colleges have to take remedial english, reading, and math before they can even begin the "college" courses that are now dumbed down to about 10th grade.

See rense.com for interesting stuff in general, and on that site the several articles that start off DOOM. They're written by a former college teacher and blow the whistle on the fraud that our colleges have become.

It's enough to make you want to squeeze necks.

meh booklearning is over rated, now youtube university is highly edumucational !

@Gopherman you are a brilliant and original thinker who can do anything. Its amazing to watch your video's and chat with you. Being able to think creatively and make things and combine different techniques the way you do is a huge asset for any family. Your family is lucky to have you and your brain. But I'll be darned if I am going to start calling you Professor Gopherman as long as you have a bazooka in your avatar!!!.. [LMAO][grouphug]

I love finding DIY videos on YT. It's snowing outside right now and I'm curled up with iced coffee and YT finding all sorts of new projects to get halfway completed before moving onto the next one.

    I like youtube too.

Was recently talking with a fellow tai chi instructor. We were talking about someone who seemed to be making stuff up. So I told my colleague that he probably learned from Master Yu. When my colleague asked who that was, I clarified that it was indeed Master You Tu Be.

In all my years of doing Construction, I have noticed that almost all of the leadership people Forman, Project Managers and even some Owners are ADHD in some respect, from slightly to extremely. I'm slightly to the right of center! Ok, almost halfway between right and center some where about here
L________ ____l_____R It would be very interesting to know how many Preppers are ADHD.
The typical person affected by this are 10 thoughts down the road as soon as the first topic is discussed,is that good or bad?
The ability to multitask efficiently is also a dominant effect! I personally think at my age it's better to have more energy than I need, than not enough. Overall I think it' a blessing!!

LOL the Mr. is still trying to comprehend my speech. My brain fires a lot faster than my mouth, and I talk fast as is, but sometimes entire chunks of sentences get skipped over. We'll be talking about burritos and I'll make about 13 mental hops to arrive at the suspension system on Dodge's new Hellcat. Out loud it sounds really random but I can backtrack through the route from A to H and it makes total sense.... to me anyway. It's like my head is constantly playing some version of Seven Degrees of Separation. It's one reason I don't build projects well with others. I've already built the entire thing in my head, eight different ways, and they're still trying to figure out whether to use nails or screws.

I don't have ADHD, but I am a self directed learner, and You Tube...and Instructables style DIY websites suit me down to the ground.

Formal education and I don't generally get along well, though I have at times surprised myself. One subject that I had to do in my last course was Work Health and Safety. Most of my colleagues were from non-English speaking backgrounds, and we had to do a long battery of multiple choice questions after reading the online learning material. I helped my colleagues...not by giving them the answers, but by asking them questions, Socratic style, and putting the questions in theoretical scenarios, so that they could work out for themselves which of the options was most likely to be the correct one. I kept on saying to them...the answer can be found in the question...and most times, it could be discerned, not so much by rote learned knowledge, but by the application of logic and reasoning. The students that I "assisted" all passed. I declined to do the test myself, and got a 'not yet competent' grading. I had learned the material, I had solved the problems, ticking online questionnaire boxes seemed to me to be a pretty superfluous exercise. I could live with not getting the piece of paper that tells me and others what I know I know.

I suppose that there are many people like me, who enjoy learning for its own sake, but who find jumping through academic hoops to be a boring activity. Now, teaching others things, I do enjoy.

@Gopherman ADHD is a catchall term for many people who process information so fast that other people cant keep up. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION and not the truth, I think the educational system has dumbed down education so much that they have to do something with the smart aka fast mental processing people and they call it ADD or ADHD instead of just being to smart.

I can tell you that I am smart, and that I have problems that are very serious that are not caused by being smart. ADHD is some rough you know what.

My old boss and I had to take an OSHA course to work in the refineries out here. He is so fricken ADHD he has ticks in his mannerisms. When we arrived there were 5 from our company and about 20 others. We asked them if we could challenge the test, they said no and we had to sit through a six hour course. We took the test, I was about 30 sec. faster than my Boss, but we both finished the test in under 5 minutes. The instructor was looking at us like we had 2 heads. My boss got a 93 and I got a 95.
1 other guy from our company passed it and 2 failed it so badly we had to pick 2 others to take the course.

Restless Genes - Pictures, More From National Geographic Magazine

    If an urge to explore
rises in us innately, perhaps its foundation lies within our genome. In fact there is a mutation that pops up frequently in such discussions: a variant of a gene called DRD4, which helps control dopamine, a chemical brain messenger important in learning and reward. Researchers have repeatedly tied the variant, known as DRD4-7R and carried by roughly 20 percent of all humans, to curiosity and restlessness. Dozens of human studies have found that 7R makes people more likely to take risks; explore new places, ideas, foods, relationships, drugs, or sexual opportunities; and generally embrace movement, change, and adventure. Studies in animals simulating 7R’s actions suggest it increases their taste for both movement and novelty. (Not incidentally, it is also closely associated with ADHD.)

Some things they taught in school are just plain stupid like history .
No one,, NO ONE ,, has ever learned from it, and people tend to repeat it, deliberately .I think that's the problem .
It's not uncommon for the kids to repeat heir parents mistakes, bad habits, and so forth.
School was not my favorite time in life ,always a struggle .
I'd rather be working, than sitting in a class room.
Now days I learn the things I want to learn, and can be productive with, to my satisfaction.
I am thankful for you tube and the investment of time others have taken to share that way .
A while back some one demonstrated the operation of the ram pump ,so I invested in the materials and built one my self, and it works .
I don't need one now, but in the event I must move from here, and the opportunity arises, I have the experience to put the system together for my self, or show others how it's done .
Learning useful things, is an investment in the future.
