When I was young, I was more muscular, more ripped, and very dark. Once when my mom saw me lying on a couch, she said I was so dark, I looked like a roast pork carcass. Ahhh... memories of the good old days.

Now, I'm just an old temple guardian dog.

I suppose the thread title could also have been then and now...

So what's YOUR when I was young story?

I was lean and mean and could run 5 miles with a pack on my back and be ready to fight when I was done...very much a guard dog.

Now I am old, bent and thin and spend my days lying in front of the fire.

When I was young, I climbed Mountains, Hunted Game, Spent a lot of time in Engineering Libraries, and the Woods.... and LOVED to blow Stuff UP.... Now that I am OLD, I live in the Woods, Look at the Mountains, let the Game HUNT Me, Do my Research on the Internet, and love being reTIRED.... Life Was, and IS, Good.... but, I still like to blow Stuff UP....

When I was young I spent as much time as I could hunting, fishing or just camping. I was, and still am a shooter. If it propels a projectile I am interested in it. When I wasn't doing any of the above I was riding. I rode dirt bikes, saddle bronc, bareback, bulls and still have the X-ray files, arthritis and a few buckles to prove it.;)

    Nice post and picture @Hanzo...

When I was young I was faster, stronger, indestructible and immortal... or so I thought...

I slowed down long enough back then to spend time learning skills like swimming in the currents, climbing the tall trees and cliffs, fishing, hunting, learning what I could eat out there, what to be aware of, cooking, crafting and the doing and thinking the old ways, values and the important things about life from Grandfathers, Grandmothers, Uncles, Aunties, Family and Friends who knew better than me way back then... and even today....

Now... I'm pretty aware of my vulnerabilities, weaknesses and immortality ...as well as how much I still don't know... and try to pass on the strengths, the skills and wisdom of those precious moments, pearls of wisdom, love, caring and long lost abilities and thoughts of those family members and friends who are no longer with me and are sorely missed....

Older in years... but still young at heart... with a smile, a helping hand, great food and a kind word for anyone... Just like Grandpa, Grandma, Aunty, Uncle and the good friends I miss.... ;)

Doesn't get any better than that!

    IMHO...

Take Care and God Bless Monkeys....

When I was young I searched for perfect moments. The ones I found are treasured memories now.

Now that I'm older, I mostly wait for the perfect moments to search for me.

When they go by I hold up my name card.

Since you are still immortal, all the other stuff doesn't matter much. You got time on your side.

Funny how when you are young and bulletproof, you do things so crazy. After your first major injury, you start to become a little, just a little more careful and aware. And as you get older and you start to feel the effects of your injuries, you start to learn to do things smarter and pay attention to what your body is saying to you.

Was telling the wifee that I thought it was funny in my morning tai chi class today, one of the instructors was working with the advanced students and asked me to help them fine tune. So we broke down one movement and did that over and over, slower and slower. When we were almost done, the instructor told the class that I taught her tai chi, some long time ago. And then she tells them that I was their model. But to not go as wide and as low as I do. I do it because I can. I had to correct her. Told the students to always listen to their own bodies. If they can go wide and low, they should. Use it or lose it. Why limit yourself to what someone else does. And if they can't, the shouldn't. But they should work towards being able to. I reminded the that I listen to my body too. When my knees ache, I won't got as wide and low. But when they aren't hurting, I do. While my knees didn't hurt today, with the wide and low stance, one knee in particular sure clicked up a storm when I shifted my weight and turned my waist. The funny part was that it was so long ago and I am so old that I couldn't remember too much about that instructor learning from me. Time to take some ginkgo?

Not that much difference physically between when I was young (not going back to high school but just out of college) and being old (golly, getting close to 60.) Then I liked to shoot, scuba dive, fly, build stuff, etc. Now, still do. Then I would regularly try with only modest success to convince good looking women to "do it" with me. Now, I am married and regularly try with only modest success to convince a good looking woman (my wife) to "do it" with me. I weigh the exact same as I did 30 years ago and my suits and uniforms from then fit about the same. But that stuff isn't that important.

Biggest difference for me and I think others is perspective about things, especially work. Think about it, you meet someone and what's one of the first couple questions? "So, what do you do?" The quiz show Jepardy identifies people by the occupation. "Alex, today we have a librarian from Buffalo." The sad thing is we buy into that as well and if the job is going bad or we loose it, then a big part of who we are seems to go as well.

The big difference now is the responsibilities, title, duties, etc. of my job no longer are a very significant component of who I am or how I see myself. That stuff doesn't matter much now. Being a good dad, faithful husband, nice guy, provider and protector of my familty, etc. are more important. Those of course significantly affect many of my decisions and that's where the biggest differences between young and old materialize for me.

When I was younger, I was carless, thought I had a good bead on things, knew it all and didn't appreciate anyone telling me different. As I reached my mid-years, I became more introspective, listened to others, took their advise and developed myself mentally and physically. Now, I think and plan more than I ever did, prepare for my future and that of my family, despair in the fact that I am indeed mortal and look forward to the freedoms the future will bring.

Always the guard dog, I would surrender my last breath in defense of my freedom, my family and my country.

Whoever said youth is wasted on the young sure got it right. If I could be even a hundred years younger, I'd have ten times as much fun the second time around, and I wouldn't get caught nearly as much.

Only 33 here, but here goes.
When I was young-er, I grew up in the coming of age of home computers and Nintendo. An introvert, the only boy, 3 older sisters. I remained a city kid trapped in the country, or so I thought. No tree houses, no archery, very little firearms........very little outdoors at all. Now a bit older, I realized how much I missed out on EVERYTHING. Now older, I'm running around the woods, building my 1st tree house, hunting, fishing, & gardening. Soaking up homesteading, self reliance, and bush craft knowledge during the week. Trying to get away almost every weekend to the woods to chip away at the tree house. Slow, simple, and deliberate. Although not a child, It feels as if I'm slowly falling in love with it for the first time. Falling in love with it as a child would have been much cheaper though. :)

When I was young? I don't remember back that far, but it must have included a lot of outdoors. Now, well, not nearly as much woods walking as I must have done, because it all seems familiar. I'm where I want to be, got all the credible bases covered, and hope that I can pick off all the MZBs before they reach the top of my hill.

Still can't cook, but trying new stuff on the stove before I have to do it in camp.

Spent much of my youth reading and trying to put into practice anything on wilderness living and dreaming of the day I could live as a mountain man.. This was all at a very early age and when I was old enough to hunt and go off camping I still dreamed of wilderness and mountains.. Spent days and evenings in a cabin, by a fire or in a ice shanty listening to tales of the hunt from the old guys as they drank and cooked up fish and game..

Now I am the "Old Guy" and I live in the mountains with the wilderness as my back yard.. My bones creak as I take a walk "up the hill" and have to stop periodically to have a "look around".. I am where I want to be.. But I still don't know it all and seak to learn more of life...

This whole thread made me smile [biggrouphug] Age is a great equalizer. And no one lives long who doesn't wise up. I am not going to tell on myself other than to say, in my youth, I never met an animal i couldn't tame (man, horse, dog or cat) but today I don't care about taming anything. Wild is so much more interesting. I still ride but don't do it as much because my back won't take the punishment of a green horse.

I hope I have gotten wiser but I'm not sure because I still do stupid things once in awhile.

    @Hanzo nice pic!

When I was young, my hair was on fire....running through the woods, bulletproof and full of adventure. If I was doing something dangerous or stupid.... I was having fun. I never really thought I would get older than 30, figuring "something" would cut my days short. I have amongst many things: watched amazing sunsets around the world; fallen from the skies; dived amongst some of the greatest locations; hiked, hunted and fished in the most beautiful country; shot and been shot at; drove and rode many fast toys and horses; and so on.....

These many years later now, I feel blessed to still be upright and watching the grand kids add up (four now with one on the way). :)
With age has come wisdom...... though from time to time, I still enjoy getting out there on the edge a bit.. :D
