Let's start off with hearing your own stories and accounts of break-ins, what happened and how a future burglary attempt can be avoided. We will discuss whatever we may feel can provide our members with useful information to help make their homes more secure.

    Here's one of my stories.

I moved into a "half-double" home, one side is where I lived, the other is rented to another family. I have a basic security system and standard locked closet for the safe and important items. I have locks on the doors, all windows are locked. A new renter moves in next door and I go to work, a 12 hour shift over the weekend. I get home to find my home burglarized. The thief came in through the attic, breaking through a closet space on the opposing side, crawling through the attic space, and came right through the doorway in my bedroom from the stairs leading into the attic. This attic space (was) private, no entry was accessible from the other side of the house. It never dawned on me to secure the attic doorway.

Suffice it to say, the attic door, and all doors not used as primary entry/exits have been sealed with barbarian cross boards, heavy steel 'L' brackets, pressure treated 2x4's which are steel plated, and the attic has been fully sealed up with 1" lumber screwed fast to the joists, and the opposing closet space has been closed off permanently. Full video surveillance integrated as well, and all deadbolts upgraded to real high security locks. Added more security throughout as well, but not up for discussion due to OPSEC.

Tell us your stories, or how do you believe you can make a home more secure. Guard dogs? Cameras on the exterior of the home? A robotic attack cat? Discuss.

    @kellory is invited. :)

Part of the Nest family of products (along with the Learning Thermostat and Protect), the Nest Cam is one of the most advanced IP cameras.
Formerly known as the Dropcam Pro, Nest Cam streams sharp, 1080p HD video from inside your home to your computer, phone, or tablet. It will alert you if it senses motion or sound so you can tune in to see and hear what's going on, and with 8x zoom and a 130 degree lens you won't miss a trick.
It comes with speakers so you can talk to anyone in the house, and eight infra-red sensors give you impressively clear night time shots.
Naturally, it integrates seamlessly with other Nest products through a shared app, and for an £8 monthly-fee you'll get more "advanced" features, including cloud storage of your video and Netatmo-style facial recognition to improve alert accuracy.
Best IP wireless security camera: keep an eye on your home, children, or the family pooch

I use these for monitoring home base when away and they work really well for my needs. You can box an area of the cameras view and any motion will activate recording and will ping your smart phone/pad with the event as it is taking place. It also comes in handy with a two way microphone for those times when you want to mess with someone.....

A good friend of mine caught his wife cheating while he was deployed with one of these cameras... she did not know it existed.... it snapped a pic of her coming in the front door playing huggy kissy with some dude.... :(

See my Avatar? hes currently 8.5 months old & 69kg.
I'm hoping he doesn't get as big as his Granddaddy (128kg)
I also have a 38kg GSD who makes enough noise to raise the dead 20 miles away if he thinks someones within 20 feet of the doorbell.

    Home security... Think its covered....:cautious:

well as for weird moments, in college i had to rush my roommate to hospital and when i came home we had been vandalized. didn't lock the kitchen window and kids next door broke in ... neighbors saw the whole thing and called the cops, thru those idiots in jail and pressed charges... the family moved away, apparently it wasn't their 1st rodeo.

I have window bars on all windows and attic exterior. I haven't figured out how to secure the window in the living room that is a big 10ft arch. its my weakest point if someone came over the fence.

The reality is short of building a concrete bunker, you cannot protect your home. When we live, a thief could come, then head to a tool rental and cut through any door or barred window made and no one would hear them.

Pitts scare people as do Doberman and other breeds. When someone comes to the door, my babies answer. They are quite convincing and hopefully the threat respects it.

Battery operated motion detectors with bright strobes and sirens work well and though they may not alert your neighbors, having multiple strobes and alarms going off will most times scare off an intruder.

Big dogs that do not like strangers are still the best, and they are portable....

So are automatic weapons... and they look like pretty bright strobes, while firing at night ;)

@Yard Dart but someone has to be home to pull the trigger. Most breakins occur when no one is home.

For those who know how to apply one, nothing quite like a Class III.

That is exactly why we ALWAYS have someone home, ALL the time... God help the FlatLander, that invades our Cabin, while AlaskaChick, is the only one Home... He will be very lucky, if he survives, the encounter... And most Individual Automatic Weapons, that are NOT BeltFeed, do NOT have Tracer Rounds in their Magazines.... So no Night Sparkles...

As Yard Dart said muzzle flash at night has strobe light effect.
An interesting side note, US tracers are red and Com Block's were green. Red going that-a-way and green coming this-a-way was a deadly pretty.

The pit, border collie, and Siberian husky are the first responders...they let us know about anyone in the vicinity.

Is there a camera or device like the one above that I could use at the cabin while I am away? I would ONLY be able to use the AT&T cell network. I do not have wifi.

You could use AT&T Cellular Data Access Point running off Solar, and then connect a WiFi Access Point to it, that could talk to a few WiFi Equipped Trail Cams, set within WiFi Range around your AoO... You should be able to get ranges of a Mile or two, seeing that your Cabin is at a High Point in the local Terrain....

I have cameras all around the house , some are obvious and some are not.
No one much bothers the place.
I also use several battery powered motion sensor lights inside and out.
    thank you harbor freight

The question is, are those cameras you have suitable for MountainMariner's situation abd application? And, can they be arranged to transmit on command via satellite?

I have been looking a the Moulten brand, and I believe that the WiFi Enabled can de set to trigger, over the WiFi link.... With the proper incoming Router and Port Forwarding set up, Yes, I believe they could be set up to do that....
