Skip the toothpaste and reach for the soap.

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

Back in the Old Days, when Men were Real Men and horses were a fast way to travel, doctor's were few and dentists were even fewer. And young ladies laughed coquettishly behind their fans so no one would see the blackened stubs of their rotting teeth.

They didn't use a lot of soap back then. In fact, in some places it was illegal to take a bath without a doctor's prescription.

Hell--the toothbrush wasn't even invented until 1938. Before that dental hygiene was handled by "chew sticks". And the occasional string tied to a doorknob.

For the last twenty-plus years I've brushed my teeth with soap instead of toothpaste. And I haven't had a single cavity in all that time.

When I go to the dentist and they give me that little doggie-bag with the toothbrush, dental floss, and toothpaste, I take it home and throw the toothpaste directly into the trash.

And not just because it's poisoned, which it is--(flouride is a very nasty whole-body and rot-yer-brain toxin)--but also because it contains abrasives that wear the enamel off your teeth and glycerin, which coats them and prevents your body from healing incipient cavities.

Yep: Your saliva actually contains an enzyme that plates new enamel on your teeth--if they are clean.

Glycerin lingers, and prevents dental healing.

Add that to a high-sugar diet with lots of fizzy phosphoric acid (that's the stuff that dissolves glass) and pretty soon you have rotting teeth with black pits that saliva can never reach the bottom of to attempt repair.

It takes seven risings to get toothpaste off your teeth. It takes two to get soap off your teeth.

Does soap taste bad? No. It tastes a little, well, soapy. But it's a very neutral taste.

Unless, of course, you get hold of that that nasty perfumed soap that smells like it came out of a French whorehouse. Or unless you try those liquid soaps which are really detergents, i.e Dr. Bonner's. Or that antibacterial soap that's so very bad for your entire body.

Ivory is good, or any other plain soap. The plainer the better. Cheap soap is good soap.

It doesn't take much, which is partly why the flavor of soap is so mild.

And soap will leave your teeth literally squeaky clean. As in "You can squeak your tongue across your teeth."

(Try that with a mouthful of glycerin.)

Soap is cheaper, healthier, works better, and you make it in the backwoods.

It's better than dying in slow increments from the fluoride in toothpaste (and ciddy-wawter), and better than having to laugh behind your fan.

    Especially for us guys.

Give it a try for about about six months and see how it goes.

Well, the soap I ate as a kid would not be called "mild" or bland. Being caught with bad words was reason to take a bite of a bar of soap, chew it up, spit out the chunks, and deal with the taste for a few hours. (No rinsing allowed). It is not a flavor I would like to duplicate. ;)

@kellory Lifebuoy ......hmmm You put the old stuff in your garage and the whole garage smells carbolic. I have some of the original. Vermont country store used to sell it. Now it has changed. They removed the carbolic. You can still buy it in England.

It is why you are a very nice and sweet caring gentleman now. Thank your family for that.

yeah...I'm with @kellory on this one. I have too many vivid memories of 'educational instruction' where I was certain my tonsils were getting the full squeaky clean treatment, don't know about my teeth. Not so keen on the idea of repeating those...lessons, if you catch my meaning. LOL! :):)

Now, @UncleMorgan you wouldn't be having us on here would you? Because I have never heard such a thing...

I got 6 bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide that I recently found out I can't use for medical purposes but makes a good mouthwash...think I will stick to using it for the time being so that I don't have any...ugly flashbacks :) or...clean ones either. LOL!

@ kellory & RickR: Yep-yep. Those were the days before it became a heresy and a felony to discipline (aka punish) children. Big difference, of course, between brushing with a little soap and chomping big chunks, but a few bites of the bath bar sure cured the early foulmouth and encouraged a higher standard of speaking.

You are not joking, it isn't April Fools so you are serious. I currently do not have Ivory soap but I will try it. So you just rub your toothbrush on the bar and brush that way? I have to admit I have memories also of that childhood punishment but then I cursed yesterday so why not try soap today.

Indeed. It takes only the smallest amount, just enough to foam you up like a good case of rabies.

My understanding is that soap will also steadily reduce and eventually remove the tough biofilm that forms on the tongue to protect the bacteria that are largely responsible for bad breath.

Toothpaste won't touch that, and the only other ordinary way to break it up is with a tongue-scraper.

So go AHHHHHH! in the mirror. If you tongue looks coated, you have bad breath to at least some degree.

Never forget that plain old soap--without any miracle additives of any kind--is still the best general antimicrobial agent/disinfectant ever discovered. If you have bad bacteria in your mouth, soap will kill them on contact.

(Note: Some bad breath comes from infected tonsils. I have heard of people beating the gag reflex and actually learning to brush their tonsils--with remarkable results. Never tried it, myself.)

One caveat about soap: When it gets all bubbly, be sure you don't inhale the bubbles. Brush gently and breathe gently. Lungs don't like soap.

If your tongue is coated in most cases it is because of a candida issue which most people have an over growth of because of awful diets.

I would like to report that @UncleMorgan is quite correct. Your teeth literally are squeaky clean after brushing with soap. I used Dove and it wasn't that bad, I just rubbed my brush on the bar. Post brushing I am used to the minty aspect which was missing but my teeth really felt clean.
