What happens when you don't have your equipment?

Ok what happens when you don't have your equipment Bob day bag whatever your on a plane and it goes down canoeing kayaking and lose your gear you don't have the normal go to stuff and your out in no man's land what do you do if you don't practice the skills with out your go to stuff.

So what would you do ?

 

My first thought was to say, "probably die". But then it depends on where you are. I do wonder if a primitive instinct would take over and a person who would normally seem clueless as to what to do would be able to take steps to survive. I know the rule of 3's so I would know that that is the first step. If it was a plane crash, I would stay in the area of the plane because those things have beacons and usually have flight plans so rescuers would be tracing the route. Kayaking incident, you would have water so that would help but shelter and try to start a fire. Once I got those going, I would want to stop and think of a rational plan. I think peoples first thought is to get help or get to safety and that is the downfall. They just head off without a plan or stopping to assess the situation.

 

As with guns, three is two and two is one and one is none. So the wise survivor has (at least) the Bulging Big Bag of Supreme Survival, the Trim Slim Baglet of Getting Along OK For the Moment, and the Itty Bitty Bag of Holy Crap This Is All I Have Left.

Three independent redundant survival kits, plus your EDC knife/supertool, flashlight, and very small pistol.

A person who loses all his gear is essentially naked to the elements. So the idea is to always have a little fallback equipment stash for when the Unexpected comes a'knockin'.

The Itty Bitty Bag should have (at least) a fire-starter & tinder, compass, whistle, mini fishing kit, space blanket, duct tape, and nylon string. It should all be stored in a small Stainless Steel measuring cup (either 8 oz or four), along with a few packets of Ramen flavoring or bullion cubes, and maybe a couple of spoonfuls of instant coffee. Then stuff it with anything else that's useful and will fit. You keep it on your person at all times.

The Trim Slim Baglet should have (in addition) a larger cook pot/container, a First Aid Kit, rain protection, more food, a water filter, full water bottle, paracord, a folding saw, and small trowel, and mini binocs. You have that in your mini-backpack, close at hand.

The Big Bag should have all the same and more of it, plus Aladdin's Lamp, a good cell phone, and a takedown .22 rifle. That's in your full gear bag, vehicle, or backpack in addition to ordinary camping gear.

This is of course, a generalization. You kits should reflect your real-world needs and the local environment. Example: Make provision for mandatory medication and spare eyeglasses as needed.

But this is the basic idea.

And if you get caught completely without gear, a la Naked and Afraid, you pick up a stick and a sharp rock, use your onboard knowledge and well-honed survival skills, and make what you need as you need it.

 

The plane could crash in a communist, radical or socialist country. (Japan, South-Eastern Ukraine, Russia or Middle East.) Motomoms response rests entirely on where, as she is. Staying in the area of the crash is generally a bad idea in the aforementioned areas. See world war 2. Japanese swarmed crash sites. So it all depends. Can you move? Do you have a parachute?

 

I think your attitude and skills have a big part of survival the person that freaks out and has gave up won't make it don't matter if you have the equipment if your attitude is not there also people that have a vice like cigarettes have a hard time when they don't have them coffee and dip or chew is the same way I seen it in Africa isreal Iraq turkey guys run out of there vice and it's like the end of the world.

If you can stay positive and your primitive skills are good your chances are really good I tend to not get all hyped up because I am in a hurricane or I broken down in nomans land I treat the bad situation like a regular day

 

@Motomom34 had a number of threads that were situational in nature and you had to survive within some tight parameters. Many folks, including myself, countered with "I'm never without my bag", which may or may not be the case but didn't get people really thinking.

"Primitive", "classical" or non modern technology skills can and usually do make all the difference in that type of situation. And I agree with @Bishop's post about attitude, which was also brought up again and again in the @Motomom34 threads. Without the will to survive, the desire to succeed, "stuff" doesn't always cut it.

 

I always have my knowledge/skills, a knife and a firesteel on my person...and the mindset to adapt, improvise and overcome.

If I lost the knife and firesteel I'd just have to adapt and improvise to replace them.

 

First thing I'd do is inventory what I have with me.

Germany isn't pleasant either. With the Nazi, Merkel working so close with Putin. best bet is try to find ww2 firearms in the forests of eastern Europe and Germany and hope they are functional.

 

I have catered my E.D.C. to match my skills. Modern Fire, Diamond Hone, Mulitool, Sheath Knife, Flashlight. Working on a belt pouch that I like so that I can pack more that that. And a pistol and ammo.

A lot depends on WHERE I am at, as to what my first move is...in my AO, I would be finding some cane to turn into a blowgun after I got a fire started. Just burn off the length I want, burn the darts into shape, burn the knots out, etc. I know that I can make that food procurement item with nothing but fire.

 

I have been to Japan. I did not encounter communists, radicals or socialists while I was there, it was just the opposite. I met welcoming pleasant people. If my plane crashed on the way there, well it would have crashed in Canada or Alaska or the Pacific. As for the response I wrote to @Bishop's question, it was where I have flown recently. @lonewolf88 I have been reading your posts and have been watching you ask other people to hunt down the information that you want. So either you can figure out how to survive, how to hunt down information or what you seek on your own or you can't.

 

In the pre-refugee era, I traveled to Germany often on business and it was quite safe. We'd typically arrive on Saturday and stay busy the whole day to avoid going to sleep. Getting one's hours messed up is bad juju. We'd visit castles, go hiking etc. with no problems.
In the so-called free world, a massive search and rescue would be mounted.

I doubt any firearm laying in the forest for years would be serviceable. As leaves rot and become dirt most munitions would be buried by now. As some intense battles on WWII's Eastern Front were fought near Kiev digging a hole in a farm field has interesting results.

Are you saying that I shouldn't seek or request a hunting partner and such? Theres many advantages to such. If you are saying I don't know how to survive and such, you are wrong. The WRC does not track wild boar, as they are non-game and a nuisance, although still dangerous game. Not to mention NC thinks cougars are extinct. (Despite numerous sightings.)

 

My first, and formost tool is my mind. Assuming this is a plane crash, and I'm uninjured, I would not have my knife or likely my fire starters. FAA doesn't allow a lot of stuff on planes. Knives are out, and I think lighters as well. Nothing that could explode, burn, or slice folks with.
First thing to do is take stock of the situation, assess what is needed, what you have, and where you can get what you don't have. Everything else depends upon those answers.
You starting point matters greatly, because FAA rules strip you of the ability to fend for yourself.
You will be forced to improvise rather than simply pick up and use a tool. (Sharp glass or jagged metal for a knife, battery and wire for fire starter, rubber raft for shelter, soda cans for water boil.

 

Can you craft a knife from the wreckage?

Yes. Although it is bullshit. Post 9/11 crap...oh well. Too bad I wasn't around during the 1950s, it was better days then. You could still bring guns in schools and no one freaked out. Now, however, a vast majority don't allow them and the few that do are concealed carry campuses.
