I posted this. I not been here long. I don't undetstand why a watch is a survival tool like brokor's post. Time does not matters in survival is... Sun up sun down. Sun up you work, sun down you sleep. I lived without lights water and pump for 2 yrs I know bushcraft.. Some people know alot about nothing.

I will let others explained it to you... But just so you know I haven't worn a watch for 25 years, and I "Survive" Just fine... I do, However, have a number of time keeping devices, here, that I use every day....

And I am moving this Thread to the appropriate Forum...

A dial watch can be used as a compass. Keep it on standard time and point the hour hand at the sun. Halfway between the hour hand and 12:00 is due south in the Northern hemisphere, due north if you are in the Southern.

I keep time using my hands and fingers. Each finger held out as far as I can is about 15 minutes, a hand about an hour.

Zackly zo. Now, there are some more bushcraft ways to suss out where north is when you forget to wind the watch or the battery runs down. Start with a stick stuck in the ground on a sunny day ---

The idea of going back to club and spear is asinine. If you really wanted to throw off the shackles of the materialistic world, you wouldn't be here. With that said, IMO it would be the epitome of stupidity to not use the tools that are around you. The whole idea is to have a backup to your gadgets, though to completely toss them because they aren't the "right" way doesn't say much for those that recommend this idea. Each person's ideas will be varied and those with a watch aren't anymore invalid than those who don't. I can understand promoting PACE planning though to just have one way limits your chances.

There are so many things that require timing and knowing time that I don;t even know where to begin.

And, I think you missed the point about everyone generally looking for good gear, no matter what they carry on here.

There are many soldiers who would disagree with TW. Ever coordinate a platoon quick attack using a wrist sundial???? It's a bitch for coordinating the fire support and assault elements at night...

    I said "I wanna watch."
    So they let me.

Good point. I've often wondered how many know such things.

For those who need a demo:
How to Use an Analog Watch as a Compass
    PS:
There are even instructions for @chelloveck... :D:D

However, I'll stick to my Military Lensatic Compass. To those who are serious about survival; I suggest they learn Land Navigation and also Celestial Navigation.

    My set of watches.

You most definitely need a watch for SHTF and society crumbles . How else are you going to end a awkward conversation other than looking at your watch and saying "Oh look at the time, I have a conference call....."

I agree to some extent that if the world goes into the crapper a watch wont be real important but Chel does make a valid point. I n defense of you compound try coordinating patrols and such with a sun dial. Even if you dont have the correct time but have the same time. Stop watches, timers, watches can all help with timing of sentries, attacks, Meetings etc. Ill keep time as long as I can. How about this scenario, A guy you meet says he will meet you at 3 pm for a TRADE FOR ITEMS YOU NEED . You have no Idea what time it is???

I used to collect watches a lifetime ago. Now I have a digi/ani Indiglo Timex :D a Seiko titanium analog and an Invicta mechanical watch. The mechanical watch is just in case watches get fried along with some larger items during an EMP event. (assuming I'm around to actually need it)
