I just love this idea. This week I read: The Original Intent of this Forum | Survival Monkey Forums and I was passed this article called Random Acts of Prepping (RAP). I think here on the monkey we have a great group of people that give RAP quite regularly. This is not just about giving and helping each other here on the monkey but also those around us (see my neighborly thread inspired by Survival Sherpa). Those little things we do that can start someone on the path to being better prepared. I have been watching what I would consider a RAP here on the monkey- Sloth, we are ready for step two... | Survival Monkey Forums one monkey helping another but also sharing with the rest of us.

    Random Acts of Prepping

Prepping is an intentional, deliberate act. Then there are times when we do random stuff that turns into an act of prepping.

I cannot name all the RAP I have received just from the members here. Random kind PM’s, offers to receive and forward mail for me to keep my identity secret, cyber hugs, some who patiently talked me through fixing my dryer or learning a new skill. Random Acts of Prepping matter…. Pass it on.

Feel free to share RAP you have given or received or scene that has made a difference.

Paying forward RAP is a nice gesture also. It takes people off guard, and helps develop a positive image of preppers and prepping that is counter to the usual media stereotype of panicking people who are selfishly, and self interestedly preparing for the end of the world as preppers anticipate it to be. Altruism, (which I sometimes think of as focussed self interested generosity) can be just as rewarding for the donor as much as the recipient.

'Random' implies some semblance of disorder, and I do not subscribe to practices without an orderly thought meant to inspire.
But, I do admire intentional acts of kindness (IAK).

The act may be intentional, but the impetus to perform that act may have been generated consequential to random opportunity. ;)

And yet, as we delve deeper into the microcosm and see it is a reflection of the macrocosm, a pattern emerges. Some call it "fractal theory" and contribute much to intelligent design as well as science and math. This is the genesis of wonder that I, personally find truly amazing, and it does offer both the creationists as well as the evolutionists a place to find common ground. But, I digress. ;)

We can all do something to inspire others --what are some examples you have experienced with prepping? (to everybody)

Some might call this speculative wonderment, "mystery"....and others might, prosaically call it, "stuff we haven't quite yet figured out, but we are still collecting data, and in due course we may arrive at a better explanatory theory" Both have their place in the world.

The thing is, that sharing mystery, and explanatory theories can be forces for good or ill.....Be generous with the good stuff I say.

I was hoping more of stories and examples of people giving and receiving random or intentional acts of kindness. I chatted with some people and a month later, they bought two buckets of food. It was a start. They bought them in case they lost power due to a storm. It wasn't huge but maybe they will stat thinking and expanding. I am not asking for boasting or bragging but I am sure there are things we would like to teach or give others but are unsure about how to gift them. I always consider pride so you always have to work around that.

Hi neighbour....I have been doing a little, plant propagation ready for summer, and I have too many seedlings for the space in my garden....would you like a few...(offers an assortment of herb, salad greens, tomatoes to choose from.) ....oh hi neighbour....here's some worm tea for you (with instructions for dilution and application) ....it's pretty easy to make, it don't smell, and the plants just love it....just look at these tomatoes I grew using worm tea....(hands neighbour a couple of juicy, ripe tomatoes).....

I am working on a culinary herb box (from recycled materials) for a Muslim neighbour who gave me a pristine computer desk for free that he was putting out on the street for the pickers. He also offered me an externally ground mounted air-con unit (in good condition) that he had. However, unfortunately I did not have a use for it. An intentional act of unexpected reciprocity sometimes works in developing community bonds as well as RAP or AoUK (Acts of unsolicited kindness).

My neighbor loves my basil that I grow, dry and package for her. Some years I don't grow basil, but I tell her to take tomatoes all the time. Well, she grows her own, but it doesn't hurt to try!

one generous soul I used to live near...in another place and another time would occasionally offer me some of her "basil".....I don't smoke, but I must say, the Alice B Toklas cookies that she offered were almost irresistibly tempting.

OK, so I've told you my neighbors are wonderful, but will certainly starve in any survival situation? Here is a place where our community really shines. We have an 85 year old who lives two doors down from us. When we first moved in, we checked on her during any power outage or extreme weather kind of thing ("yeah, we're snowed in, we're walking out to the store, can we bring you something?") We later found out that several of our neighbors also drop in at the same times. The last snow she put a sign up on her door that said, "I'm fine and I don't need anything".

I have been welcomed here, courtesy and encouragement has been extended to me by many.

Two here, have opened up privately to me, will not be named...you know who you are. But I truly thank you for the openness, honesty, and dialogue. Privacy will not be betrayed.

    Thank you all, monkeys.

There are about 3 other sites I visit , yet this one remains my favorite.
Most of the folks here seem to be mature responsible folk and there is a lot of positive input going on as well.
I may not be the sharpest tack in the drawer, but It's fun to learn among you all.

Don't worry, arleigh...few though they may be...I have my obtuse moments here. This is my online home, much to the amusement of some, and the chagrin of others. ;) I much appreciate the generosity of the folks here. (y)

It occurred to me the other day, that those of us that share are improving the odds of those that pay attention, and are likely to survive whether we agree with them or not. " The unsavory as well as the respectable."
This age after things have fallen apart, will be quite different than any age of the past, in the ups and downs of mankind.
This media of communications has brought us together like no other media has ever done nor can do .
We are not competitive ,although there is a little besting that goes on. yet still yearn to earn more from one another and that's cool.
Most here seem to have the humility to share their failures and successes, which I think is admirable.
I hope it continues so long as the internet is still functional.
