Ok the end of the world is here what are smokers going to do i don't smoke have never tried it and don't want to but there are many people that do how are they going to get by.

Why I ask is I work inmates and seeing what they will do to get a smoke would really surprise you taking dip or chew that's been spit out and drying it out and smoking it smuggled into to the prison in places in there body by the way fla prisons are smoke free lol or are supposed to be.

So what will you do how will you make it.

As for me I don't and won't so I am good.

I don't smoke either... but I will gladly barter you two cigs for that box of .40 cal ammo you have.... or maybe those four cans of food you have. I understand it has been 6 weeks since your last drag....come on man, hand over the cans and I will sport you a couple to smoke.... ;)

Being prepared.... also means being ready to barter for things folks need. It does not take much space, to vacuum seal & stack some cartons of cig's now...that could be useful later on, as a means to get what you might need. You don't drink.... cool, but do you have liquor put away that can be used for medical or barter means.....

Sorry for the minor thread deviation from the OP.... but one man's weakness/addiction, is another's opportunity to score a deal, in an honest manner that is fair to both parties interest. :)

Tobacco has been a long time high dollar crop in Virginia, (Virginia Leaf) Lexington, and other places throughout the south. I do not (at this time) know how far north it will grow. But....I am putting in a garden, so I might add a plant or two, just to see if it will grow here. (I do not smoke either, but used to smoke)
Edit: it looks like it will grow as far north as Canada.Tobacco Growing and Harvesting Information - New Hope Seed Company

Grand dad always grew tobacco. Smoked some in his pipe and used it to kill bugs in his garden and worms in his animals. Don't have any idea how to do any of those things, but he sure found it handy. This was in Minnesota.

    That's interesting.

Been stockpiling liquor, (I like it but can't drink much - drives the blood pressure nutzo). But being an ex-smoker for over 30 years didn't think much about tobacco for barter use, which is what the liquor is for. A full 375 ml bottle of Jack or Crown for a full bottle of propane could come in handy. But you guys are right about tobacco.

I recall seeing a WW2 documentary years ago where a woman being interviewed said that she had personally witnessed other women quite literally prostitute themselves for cigarettes.

Hmm, maybe stockpiling tobacco is a much better idea!

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

Well, if it's feminine companionship you're after, I'd skip the cigarettes, and go with lipstick, eyebrow pencils, and every other kind of makeup I could get my hands on, plus slinky lingerie and/or assorted nylons.

Many women will want/need to feel attractive, even (and especially) in the direst circumstances. And some will consider makeup a cost of doing business--and want to do better business than their many competitors. Whether a woman is interested in keeping the man she has, or getting a better one, or just emptying some male pockets, beauty always helps.

As a recent (28 month) ex smoker, it's still fresh enough in my mind that I can maybe add something here.

I figure there's going to be 3 kinds of smokers out there post SHTF. The first has either prepped with lots of ciggies and will keep them for him/herself, then when they're gone, they'll shrug and say "It was nice while it lasted" and get on with their lives. The second is going to horde them, trade for whatever and when they run out, they'll detox for a few weeks and finally come to the conclusion they're better without ciggies. Then, the third kind will buy, barter, steal, prostitute themselves or their kids, do anything to get more and will live miserably until they finally croak, seeking just one more ciggie every day, no matter what the cost.

It's not gonna be easy or pretty for those who are addicted, be it ciggies, pain killers, illegal drugs, meth, or even those with chronic conditions needing daily meds such as diabetes, prostate problems, thyroid problems, etc.

    *just thinkin' out loud*

The smell of smoke will give you away ,not to mention the lighting and the glow .
some one looking for others with supplies is going to be alert to the smells in the air.

I can't be around somebody who smokes, even the lingering scent makes me sick.
Cigarettes may not be the best long term storage/barter item, but if you do have the opportunity post SHTF, I wouldn't ignore saving some for barter. I imagine the tobacco stored in #10 cans and rolling papers would be preferable for long term storage.

Historically, tobacco has always been a great barter item.

Isn;t tobacco smoke good as a bug repellent or something like that.

Also, arleigh be laying down the mountain man advice. Lotta scalps got took, and a lot of GI's later on, needing to take that last hit before calling it a night.

Which brings up another important point - taking care of one's health as best one can. SHTF is no place for overweight diabetics. Some conditions are tough to prevent and are a result of the onset of age. But doing all one can right now to stay healthy will go a long way. Even if a condition shows up, being otherwise healthy (depending on what the condition is) can make a real difference in the longevity department.

Congratulations on your quitting smoking TXKajun. After I finally succeeded I had a relapse 7 years later. But it only lasted a couple months. I became too grossed out and had to stop. Blecch!

I smoked for 40 years until one day I just up and quit...cold turkey...no gum, no meds, no nothing. If you have what it takes to survive SHTF, quitting your addictions won't be a major issue to you.

"Recent" is relative, uv cuss. I'm still off the weed since the first of this year and I can say that the cravings have not died down yet. If I were to stockpile smokes for trade goods, I'd have them smoked before I needed to trade. I dare say I'm going to get strange looks in the drug stores when I start stocking cosmetics instead of tobacco.
