If you've never heard of camping or jungle hammocks they are a great way to cut pack weight.they are ultralight, extremely quick to setup and takedown.in camo they dissappear easily. you can sleep in uneven or wet areas .they replace a tent&fly/mosquito netting/ ground sheet: the hennesy has very high marks.:

"Rocky, wet ground? No problem if you're sleeping in a hammock. Tom's hammock includes a rain flyand mosquito net for comfort in variable conditions. Special supports allow you to sleep stretched out on your back, or on your side."

Tom Hennessy demonstrates the new Ultralight Backpacker at the ALDHA West Pacific Crest Trail Annual Zero Day Kickoff at Lake Moreno, Ca, April, 2003. This yearly event celebrates the ingenuity of the long distance hiker.

The Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail are the testing grounds for the newest ultralight camping equipment in the United States!

-Hammock campers sometimes prefer to sleep outside the shelters on the AT for privacy and peace and quiet.
When every ounce counts, the 1 lb. 15 oz. Ultralight Backpacker Asym is a winner, lightening your pack by 5- 7 lbs. by replacing heftier tents and eliminating the need for bulky sleeping pads. The tree-covered, sloping terrain of the trail is perfect for camping hammocks. Many hikers prefer sleeping out in their Hennessy to a night in the trail-side shelters which are continually becoming more crowded and noisy. The tree hugger straps protect trees from rope burns and, unlike a tent, hammocks do not leave footprints on the ground and no leveling or trenching is needed.

I can imagine that it would be lighter to carry than ground stuff, though I'm a tosser in my sleep and I think if I had one, I'd wake up with a broke neck. Haha. I'll stick to the ground.

That looks way more comfortable than sleeping on the ground.

Supposedly in the "new breed"of hammocks you lie 10-20 degrees across the center like a brazilian hammock so you sleep cradled laying flat, not like a bananna ( which can lead to a sore back).
there are quite afew makers .The (a) drawback was 4season use; there was no insulation between you and the air(now I see hennesy has produced an isulated design). Hennesy also makes "snakeskins"cloth tubes on the rigging, when you want to break down you gather up the hanmoock and fly Ithink, and slide a snakeskin down from each end bundles up the unit into a nylon snake that gets wound up and stuffed in your pack.
Biggest advantage for my area is the incorporation of mosquito netting. Lets see $180.00;Hammock shelteror towards a reloading outfit or towards a .357??

The Henny hammocks are really nice, if you can afford them. I instead use a Vietnam jungle hammock with no canopy, and I carry a mil spec poncho, which I drape over the top with some 550 cord. On colder nights, I just jump in with my Halo sleeping bag and all is well. All 3 components still weigh less than any other system I have used, and conveniently fit inside my side pocket of my British Webtex PLCE 90 ltr rucksack.

Is the hammock itself canvas or nylon? seems canvas would be kinda heavy and bulky...
