Over here in durka durka afghaistan we get a lot of our food shipments from out side of Asia for a lot of obvious reasons. I like milk and one of the products they bring is UHT (ultra high temperature) pasturized milk. It does not require refrigeration until opened. By the time this milk gets here it still has 7 months of shelf life left on the "best if used by date".
UHT heats the milk to 280'F where the minimum legal requirement in NM for regular HTST milk is around 168'F. Powdered milk is made by injecting milk in a dryer chamber held at right about 400'F which I think is the reason why it tastes the way it does.
The company that makes the milk sent over seas is called Gossner foods, Inc. They are in Logan Utah 84321.
Its definitely better than rehydrated dried powdered milk.
All I know is when I get back state side I am going to add some UHT milk to my stocks and rotate through it every few months. Looked up Gossner web site and you can buy from them, 27 cartons of 8 ounce milks, about 1-5/8 gallons for just under $9 plus whatever shipping runs. Quarts are about $10 for 3 gallons total I think to get me started I will just bring back a suitcase of milk cartons.
For me, in NM shipping on one case is around $30 to $40.
I would hate to see what the shipping to Afghanistan is.
Might have to see if I like the Walmart UHT milk, its only $2qt, no shipping.

There's a reason it's so cheap...I've had some go bad months before the expiry date. N.A.S.T.Y!

Agreed, it is nasty. Are there any outward signs that its bad? Such as swollen carton? Or it is just a surprise you get when you open it?
I drink a lot of these Gossner milk cartons and have yet to get a bad one. I drink at least 6 per day and they are not refrigerated when they are put in the cooler, I get warm ones almost all of the time.
Herd that a new locally owned premium grocery store opened up where I live to compete with Walmarts TSA inspired long lines since I have been away. This new places selling point is "short checkout lines" and I think they will do well. They might carry or might get it since I hear they will do special orders.

For about a $ each I would do it.
Price plus shipping from Gossner would put them closer to $2 each for me.

The main thing that I'd notice was the soured milk would form a layer on top, so there wasn't the usual "slosh" when I would move the carton. No swelling, and some of the ones closest to the expiration were almost a solid block of soured "jell."
On the plus side, the flavor (before they went bad) was on par with normal store-bought milk.

I wonder if you kept it cool if you could extend the shelf life. I do not think my storage every gets above 60, I wonder if that would prolong the life.

I've never seen it around here, but then I've never heard of it before now. Thanks @oil pan 4 for posting this. It is something I will be checking into.

For some reason I had been lead to believe UHT milk wasn't very good. Its better than powdered IMO.

I would think so. Main thing that would cause it to be less than fresh would be for the milk and fat separating out and freezing which would encourage separation..
Skim milk should avoid this, whole milk would do it more.

I drank this stuff for YEARS! And, yes it tastes a bit different but it is so convenient and keeps a long time. I look for it today in Walmart but didn't find any and they employees I asked never heard of the stuff. I have going to try this Dollar Tree next time we're in town because I would like to get a couple of cases just to have around...

Oh! And, I have never had a bad one and frankly don't see how it would be possible unless it was simply mistreated. Once it's open then it must be refrigerated. I think the shelf life is about 2 years but honestly can't remember so don't quote me on that...

I still think a case of e-coli taking out my kidneys is worse.
Why? Because the live milk can kill you or worse.

I drank some in Japan in '71, I was amazed it was not cold, it sucked but you know it grew on you, much better than powdered.

I noticed the milk made in japan had a bit of a fishy taste.

I stocked up on this stuff at dollar tree. Kept it in old refrigerator (non working) in a cool space. Had a couple of cases of quarts. Only pulled from there when was out of milk and creamer completely otherwise. At some point about 1 year after purchase of first of these. Using oldest 1st, now had about 3.5 cases. Last half of 1st case was gone. Total crap. 2nd case was gone bad as well. Ended up abandoning trying to keep milk on hand this way. YMMV .... but I don't think it will much.
