Hello everyone! I recently stumbled upon survival monkey and saw that there is a wealth of knowledge here to be soaked in.

Im 29, currently near Chicago and wanting to escape everything. I guess you could say I'm another person that wants to live off grid.

I'm going to say I have zero survival experience. I do however have some basic knowledge from reading books and checking out youtube.

I havent had the best life. And I seem to keep running into road blocks every few years or so. Im tired of the daily struggle. Im tired of having to try to please people. I sometimes feel I was born in the wrong time frame.

So I am. I Dont plan on leaving tomorrow, not a month. I plan on leaving when I know how to handle myself, where i'm going, how im getting there; and how to survive there.

Sorry for the long intro. I look forward to learning from everyone.

Hello @Lekdro glad you found us. I would make a joke about survival and Chicago but ...... You sound very
This is a great plan. Many think they can survive and they have gadgets that they rely on and when those fail, disaster happens. Look forward to reading your posts and if you have questions, we have some real experts on here.

Thank you all for the welcome! @Motomom34 i dont blame you for wanting to crack a joke! I can imagine how it sounds. I actually grew up in the outer subburbs and ended up here because of a job. In all honesty, the city was a nice place to visit, not to live.

I'm very excited to be here. Thanks again!

    Welcome.

Got any ideas on where you want to go?

Do you have skills that would let you move to an area far from a place like Chicago?

Skills like auto mechanic, welder, plumber, carpenter, etc where those skills can earn you a honest living while being far from a shithole like Chicago.

I would tend to advise against jumping from ORD to the wilds of Alaska. Ask @BTPost he can tell you stories about that going wrong.

Make the transition in "Stages" while turning your life around. If you stay in the same environment, friends/enemies, you can probably expect the same results.

Alaska was a dream until I saw a post on here about a man that was dropped off and 9 days later was in need of rescue. I want to be ready, not chewed up and spit out.

As far as a destination... I am still thinking on that. I would like to be in the woods. And at the sametime if something were to happen, i would like to be somewhat near civilization.

As far as skills, i have basic mechanic and carpentry skills. My father once said i'm a jack of all trades because of my ablity to pick up on things.

I'm currently in the process of getting a new job. The main focus is to save as much money as i possibly can so when the time is right, i can just go.

I have a small amount currently saved, but i know im a ways from having everything I need.

I feel like fresh meat on the chopping block! I already appreciate the direct questions and suggestions. Keep em' coming!

I have gear that I would like to share and start a new thread on. I would like to know what to keep, what to add, and what to get rid of. Is there a particular section i should post that in?

I betcha if you read a bit here and there, you'll see plenty of opinions on what's worth it and what's not. Might even find comments and reviews on the stuff you already have.

    Welcome from another new guy.

On Alaska, and that dude that got in trouble and rescued in 9 days (and I suppose many others..). There are other ways to do it. I have acreage in the woods, off grid and very private, but only an hours drive from town. Some want far more adventure, of course, I'm just saying that you can come here with the right attitude and a little money and learn and go from there..
